Sanjay Hooda, CCIE No. 11737, is currently a principal engineer at Cisco, where he works with embedded systems and helps define new product architectures. His current passion is to design the next-generation campus architecture, and he is focused on simplifying
the design and deployment of wired and wireless infrastructure. Over the last 17 years, Sanjay’s experience spans various areas including high availability; messaging in large-scale distributed systems; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA); large-scale software projects; and enterprise campus and LAN,WAN, and data center network design.

Shyam Kapadia, Ph.D., is currently a technical leader in the Data Center Group at Cisco. He graduated from the University of Southern California with Ph.D. and master’s degrees in computer science in 2006. His research interests broadly lie in the area of networking systems including wired, wireless, ad-hoc, vehicular, and sensor networks. He has co-authored several conference and journal publications in these areas including a book chapter in the relatively nascent area of intermittently connected wireless networks (http://anrg.usc.edu/~kapadia/publications.html). At Cisco, for the first few years, he was an integral part of the team that delivered the next-generation Catalyst 6500 Sup 2T platform. During the past few years, he has been intrinsically involved in developing solutions for data center environments with more than 25 submitted patents in this area. Over the past 12 years, Shyam has been the speakers chair for a premiere Open Source conference, Southern California Linux Exposition (SCALE), hosted in the Los Angeles area. Padmanabhan Krishnan is a software engineer in the Data Center Group at Cisco. He joined Cisco 7 years ago and has more than 12 years of experience in various areas of networking and telecommunication. He obtained his master’s degree in computer science from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Madras University, India. His research work for the master’s degree included Diffserv, MPLS traffic engineering, and QOS routing/Connection Admission Control in ad-hoc wireless networks. Padmanabhan has worked in many overlay technologies in Cisco such as 802.1ah, TRILL, FabricPath, and VPLS. He was responsible for the design and development of the core infrastructure used by the forwarding drivers and many Layer 2 features in the next generation Catalyst 6500 Sup 2T Platform. Prior to joining Cisco, Padmanabhan worked in ATM signaling and DVB-RCS, an interactive on-demand multimedia satellite communication system specification.

Potent Introduction but could have been more.

I recently finished reading "Using TRILL, FabricPath and VXLAN:Designing Massively Scalable Data Centers with Overlays" (TFVx-MSDC). The book is written by three leading Cisco Data Center experts and it is certainly a potent introduction on MSDCs. Let me start with the positives first:
The book covers the need and benefits for MSDCs in the first chapter where authors briefly introduce all the new technologies such as TRILL, FabricPath, OTV, Leaf/Spine Architectures etc. From chapter 2 onwards, the book deep dives into specific technologies ranging from IS-IS to FabricPath and VXLAN. Last three chapters are devoted on addressing deployment and migration considerations and provided good pointers on achieving successful migrations with minimal downtimes. TFVx-MSDC is the first book on overlays and does a commendable job of covering all the major topics in this domain. I think this is one of the best complied resource one can find on FabricPath and TRILL and if your MSDC strategy includes these technologies then this book is a must read.
Now let me highlight couple of negatives as well:
I personally think the treatment of VXLAN is not as comprehensive as I expected it to be. It seems like this topic was an afterthought but authors did their best to cover it. I understand VXLAN is an evolving technology but still the treatment could have been more comprehensive. I also didn't see anything on SDN/automation which is one of the key drivers for MSDC architectures. I also didn't see any case study or design discussion on leaf-spine layer 3 based data center architecture where you don't need to run TRILL or FabricPath and OSPF/ECMP/VXLAN are used to achieve the requirements of Any-to-Any, flat forwarding and optimal east-west connectivity in the data center.
Overall I think the book is a good start on MSDCs but in the next edition, authors need to add more material in the area of SDN, VXLAN, Cisco ACI and vendor agnostic fabric architectures.

FANTASTIC DATA CENTER RESOURCE!!

Are you a CTO or CIO who wants to get familiar with the overlay technologies? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Sanjay K. Hooda, Shyam Kapadia and Padmanabhan Krishnan, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that helps you, by providing information on all of the major overlay technology options for data centers.
Authors Hooda, Kapadia and Krishnan, begin by describing the major requirements of massive scale data centers and the associated deployment challenges. Then, the authors provide a brief survey of the various overlay technologies that are employed in data center environments. They continue by providing a brief introduction to IS-IS. Then, the authors introduce FabricPath: A novel Cisco overlay solution; and, provide details of the architecture and inner workings of FabricPath, both from the point of view of control plane and data plane. They then introduce TRILL, an IETF standard, and provide details of the architecture and inner workings of TRILL. Next, the authors provide a detailed description of VXLAN, a popular MAC over IP/UDP overlay deployed in data center environments. They continue by covering the different deployment possibilities with FabricPath, along with representative examples. Then, the authors explain how the current data center deployments can be migrated to TRILL. Finally, they describe some specific deployments, where multiple overlay technologies may be employed to realize an end-to-end solution in data center environments.
In other words, this most excellent book describes data center deployments, by using overlay technologies, with emphasis on the three most popular ones: FabricPath, TRILL and VXLAN. In fact, the main goal of this great book is to provide a methodology for network architects and administrators to plan, design, and implement massive scale data centers, by using overlay technologies.

Addresses a wide range of audience including CXOs/Marketing/Biz. Dev and all the way to Engineers/Architects

I have gone through first few chapters of the book and I have to say it is extremely well written, in terms of addressing a range of audience including CXOs/Marketing/Business Development all the way to Engineers/Architects level. First two chapters were extremely valuable to me - first chapter gave an overview of data center emerging trends - it actually lists out each line item (for example, Scalability, Agility, Forwarding, etc.) and provides explanation on what each of this term means in the modern data center. It gave a good overview to me on why we are seeing all the new innovations and why new companies starting up in the Data Center space.
2nd chapter is an excellent introduction of various overlay technologies. The chapter takes an approach of what problem statement the overlay technology is trying to address, what are the requirements and what benefits customers can achieve by deploying the overlay technology - all of this without going into nitty gritty details of how it is done. This part was very helpful to me.
Rest of the book goes into details of each of the overlay technology and provides in-depth explanation including overview, architecture, packet flows, design best practices and basic configuration
Finally the book ends with a chapter dedicated to interoperability of various overlay technologies and provides some real-world case studies to exemplify the interoperability concepts.
This is an outstanding book as it addresses very well some of the most important innovations happening in the DC networking space - overlay technologies. Can't wait to read more.
