Trial Bible

There is not really anything anyone can say about Trial Techniques, other than it is the Trial Bible for all up and coming litigators (and even many current litigators). A staple of America's law school classes, Trial Techniques is wonderful guide to not only give order, but an advantageous edge, to one's trial preparatons. Professor Mauet puts forth useful information in an easy to use format. Not only is he a great writer, but a wonderful lecturer on his techniques. If you have any use for attempting to organize a trial, or if you are a student of the law, this book is for you.

I bought a previous edition of this book about 25 years ago when I was a fledgling prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's Office. I still think it's one of the best, one of the most practical aids a trial attorney can have.

About the Author
Eric H. Roth teaches international graduate students the pleasures and perils of academic writing and public speaking in English at the University of Southern California (USC), and holds the title of “Master Lectuerer”. He also consults English language schools on communicative methods to effectively teach English. Roth co-authored Compelling Conversations: Questions and Quotations on Timeless Topics in 2006 to help English language learners increase their English fluency. Recommended by English Teaching Professional magazine, the advanced ESL textbook has been used in over 50 countries in English classrooms and conversation clubs. Easy English Times, an adult literacy newspaper, has published a monthly column, "Instant Conversation Activities," based on the book since 2008. The first specific version for a particular country, Vietnam, was published in 2011. Compelling American Conversations: Questions and Quotations for American English Language Learners , designed to help American immigrants develop both academic vocabulary and strengthen speaking skills in English, came out in 2012. Great update of a classic.

Peter Matthews' textbook (1st edition from 1974) is definitely THE classic textbook on morphology for its time and context (late 20th century post-Chomsky American linguistics). Unlike other introductory morphology textbooks, it places little emphasis on the latest theories of the month, focusing instead on the major problems faced in describing systematically the structure of words in various languages. It does this through extended, careful examination of concrete language data. Yet at the same time, the book has historically played an important role in the development of morphology in the US during the last 30 years, by articulating the basics of the Word-and-Paradigm approach to morphology as an alternative to the traditional structuralist dichotomy (Item-and-Arrangement vs. Item-and-Process).
This is just the best place for a student of morphology to start.

Not the best...

I hated having to use this text in my morphology class. It does cover all of the major issues and concepts, but does so in roundabout way. I often found the book confusing and had to reference online resources to make sense of it.

If you are going to be teaching a course in morphology, please look for a book that is more student friendly.

my favorite textbook is "Morphology" by P

I've forgotten how many different textbooks I've used in my morphology classes during my 40 years as a linguistics professor. However, my favorite textbook is "Morphology" by P. H. Matthews. I've used the 1974 as well as the 1991 edition.

With his 1972 "Inflectional Morphology", Matthews, with his modernized Word and Paradigm (WP) model, reintroduced the serious study of morphology in modern linguistics, after decades of wandering in the wilderness of American structuralist Item and Arrangement (IA), which was also adopted uncritically by the Chomskyan school (cf. Chomsky's "Syntactic Structures" from 1957, where central parts of the analysis is crucially based upon the outdated Item and Arrangement model).

The insights from the 1972 book are all presented in "Morphology". He presents the IA model in all details, and then demonstrates its shortcomings. Then, he presents the WP model and relates it to syntax and morphophonology.

I have to admit that some of my students thought it was a difficult book, but it awakened a life-long interest in morphological theory in others who are now themselves linguistics professors and morphology specialists.

Of course, developments in morphological theory after 1991 are not mentioned in the book, but I would still recommend "Morphology" as a textbook in an introductory course. This book gives the students the basic understanding and tools for a later specialization.

Display Fonts, Invisible Fonts, and Font Wars

You are looking at it right now, and if it is doing its job, you don't even notice it. It might represent a creation that has taken centuries to come to its current state of perfection, or it might be something that a dedicated specialist worked on for years and brought out a decade ago. It represents artistry directed within a circumscribed realm. I am talking about the font in which these letters are presented. Thirty years ago, fonts were usually the interest of only a select few in the printing world, but now every computer is charged with fonts and everyone gets to be an amateur typographer (technically, the font is a specific set of metal parts, or digital files, that allows reproduction of letters, and a typeface is the design of letters the font allows you to reproduce, but you can see how the words would get used interchangeably). Simon Garfield is not a professional typographer; his role is bringing out fine nonfiction about, say, stamp collecting, history, or the color mauve. But he has an amateur's enthusiasm for fonts, and communicates it infectiously in _Just My Type: A Book About Fonts_ (Profile Books). This is not a collection of type designs, though there are many illustrations. In most cases it won't help you in finding out what font you happen to be looking at (but it will tell you how to do so in surprising ways). It is a book of appreciation for an art that is largely invisible, but is also essential.

I would not like to read pages set in any of the fonts in one of Garfield's last chapters, "The Worst Fonts in the World." On the list is Papyrus, which caused a stir when it was used extensively in the film _Avatar_. The expensive film used a free (and overused) display font, and font fans noticed. There was also a font war (also known as a "fontroversy") when in 2009 Ikea decided to change its display font from Futura to Verdana. The change inspired passionate arguments in mere bystanders, "like the passion of sports fans," says Garfield, and the _New York Times_ joked that it was "perhaps the biggest controversy to come out of Sweden." The biggest of font wars has had a comic edge to it, and it is the starting point for Garfield's book. Comic Sans is a perfectly good font. It looks something like the letters you see in comic books, smooth, rounded, sans serif, clear. Because it caught on and was quickly overused, there has been a "ban Comic Sans" movement. Even the heads of the movement, which is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, admit that Comic Sans looks fine, say, on a candy packet; but they have also seen it on a tombstone and on a doctor's brochure about irritable bowel syndrome. If you see a font and you wonder which one it is, you can take steps to identify it. Lots of people like to do this. It is especially useful to examine the lower case g. (The other character that reveals a lot is the ampersand, which, maybe since it is not a letter or a punctuation mark, appears in exuberant eccentricity even in some calm fonts.) That g has a lot of variable points; it might have a lower hook or it might have a loop, it might have a straight line on the right, or the upper loop might have an ear that rises or droops, and this doesn't even get into whether the upper loop is a circle, a long or wide ellipse, or has uniform width. Take a look at the g letters shown here, or in your regular reading matter, and you will be amazed at how variable a selection of even only a few can be. If you have your g, you can look it up in font books, but there are so many fonts now that no book comes close to showing them all. There's an application for the iPhone which allows you to take a picture of the letter in question, upload it somewhere, and then get suggestions of possible matches. Or you can go to a type forum and ask there, because there are lots of people devoted to hunting down this sort of thing. And they take it so seriously that, as on many internet forums, they get rather snarky about disagreements.

If you don't pay attention to fonts (and most of them do their work best by not calling attention to themselves), Garfield's entertaining book might get you started. There are chapters about the difficult matter of copyrighting a font, because if you design a good font it is easy to copy it, and there isn't much that can be done about font piracy. Font designers work for love, not money. There's a chapter on "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy white dog" and other phrases that show all the letters, or particular words that display a lot of the letters most important to font design. There's plenty of history starting with Gutenberg and the historical Roman types from which are descended many of the fonts we read every day. Between the chapters are "font breaks" to praise Albertus or Gill Sans and to tell about how they came to be designed, with plenty of anecdotes and other funny or sad stories. This is a delightful, amusing book about a whole world most of us take for granted.

A book on fonts...really?

Simon Garfield is a British author who has written non-fiction works delving into everything from the history of AIDS in Britain, to the attitudes of the British during and after WW2. He's a splendid writer who concentrates on - shall we say - somewhat "quirky" topics. Case in point is his current book on fonts (or founts, as they used to be called).

Fonts came into being with the invention of the printing press in the late 15th century. It is shocking to realise that the printing of books for the masses has only existed for a fraction of man's existence. Books are such an integral of our lives that its amazing to think only 600 years ago books were owned only by the very wealthy or religious orders.

Garfield traces the history of fonts from their earliest days, paying special attention to those which we're most familiar with - Helvetica, Gill Sans, Arial, and Akzidenz Grotesk (a favorite of mine, if only for the name). He writes about the artisans behind the lettering, and most interesting, how certain fonts cause emotional responses in the people who view them. Why were some fonts popular for hundreds of years, only to fall from favor? How do fonts determine what consumers buy and what they don't buy? And how boring our lives would be if everything was printed in the same font.

Garfield has a lively writing style and is never boring. He gives a very good reference section at the back of the book, which is very helpful to those readers who want to know more.

Unexpected Five-Star Journey Should Be Everyone's "Type"

I hope the (deservedly enthusiastic) reviews here from various "font geeks" will not lead general readers to believe this book is mostly for graphic arts specialists. I'm someone who generally pays more attention to what words have to say than how the letters are formed, and yet I found this to be one of the most enjoyable books I've read in years. Might have something to do with the author being from the UK, where clever writing is clearly emphasized and appreciated. For sheer writing quality, and therefore reading pleasure, it was an actual page-turner. To say nothing of the fun of the many short "Fontbreak" chapters and the witty visual samples and captions interspersed throughout (a good reason for buying the print version).
As I've previously found with works by Malcolm Gladwell & Atul Gawande, Simon Garfield's book was both fun to read an intellectually gratifying in its combination of light-touch prose and eye-opening history. It's not exaggerating to say this book has changed my whole perception of the reading experience from both a tactile and an historical point of view. Indeed it changes my visual appreciation of the world OUTSIDE of books in a way that hasn't happened since my sitting through two semesters of The History of Western Art in college! Immersed while on the crosstown bus, I found myself lifting my eyes to examine every awning I passed, wondering what is that font, how old is it, who chose it for this store or billboard, etc. etc.
Per Janet Maslin's rave in the New York Times, I really hope JUST MY TYPE becomes a surprise hit like Lynne Truss's EATS, SHOOTS & LEAVES -- and for the same word-loving audience, not just (excuse the pun) graphic design types. It deserves it.

"THE" book of any family!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is totally AMAZING! I am not even a home-schooling mom, but this book can be applied to ANYONE! YOU WON"T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!

Not for anyone who has a less than normal life!

I like a few books from titus2 ministries, but this is a fail. I regret wasting my money on it and because it was a few days out of their 30 day return policy, the maxwells would not let me return it, also warning me that they will examine closely the book and nickel and dime me for any imperfections. They love money. Anyway! This book sucks. I'll save you 25.00 and tell you how to set up the schedule- make a table in Microsoft word. Make enough rows to segment the day into half hour increments, and enough columns to put each persons name at the top. For each column under child A start making that child's schedule. Then, do the same thing for child b, c, etc. when you see conflicts in timing, adjust the schedule. Some activities you will all be doing together. Print the schedule and hang it up.
The big issue I have with this book is 95% of it is plugging her other materials, along with letters from women telling her how MOH is awesome. I DO NOT CARE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE think about MOH according to the Maxwells. Of course they aren't going to put negative feedback in their book. Why would I want to read censored reviews anyway? Why am I paying $25 to do so? When not reading glowing reviews and Teri's advertisements for other products, you'll read about scheduling. Um. Really. just tell me how to make the schedule already! So, finally at the end, most of which most people will just skip to, she tells you how to micromanage everyone's day. The only positive to this that I took home was to schedule time for things you wish you'd always do. Like sewing. A half hour is better than nothing. Or actually setting aside a half hour to spend with just one child. Setting the schedule up helps you to see that you really can get a ton accomplished daily.
The scheduling kit is bogus, who on earth would cut out hundred of tiny squares? How about stop being so cheap and include mini post its? Sheesh. I feel like I got totally ripped off and regretted not purchasing this used on eBay. The scheduling kit is not needed and this book, even with scheduling kit should be $10. Also, this schedule would be ridiculous to tend to every day. For one, what household is going to be so strict about every half hour falling into this allotted time and would you really want to be in such a home? This book is not for people who don't have cookie cutter lives. We are a military family and my husbands schedule is crazy. I also have some health problems and we are a one vehicle family at the moment, so unless you can book every appointment at a certain time each day, like your doctor will be like yes, let me move all my other appointments to fit you in....then you are doomed. Don't let the maxwells feel like you are a failure for not adhering to such a strict schedule. Jesus hardly had a schedule. One of the maxwells told me in an email "if God led you to buy this book, you can be sure he wants you to implement it (and not return it)." Um, right, it has nothing to do with your love of money. Riiiiiiiggghhhttt. lol

Great resource for ANY parent!

I did not buy this on Amazon but bought it years ago and wanted to leave a review. I love this book. I have ADD and homeschool 5 kids and the idea of this books is perfect for me. But it's like AA ... it works if you work it. Which I didn't work it. I set up all the plans and then stopped doing it. And things got chaotic. Now that my kids are ages 6-15, it's time to break this book out again and read it and do the planning again. The only problem for us is that every day is pretty different so it's hard to do a schedule. I couldn't do this system when I had nursing babies because I attachment parent and so naps/feedings depended on the kid, not a schedule, and I never put them down to sleep. Anyway ... now that they are not napping and all get up around the same time every day (staggered depending on age), I'm going to give this a shot again. I think it's a great resource for any parent!

Sanjay Hooda, CCIE No. 11737, is currently a principal engineer at Cisco, where he works with embedded systems and helps define new product architectures. His current passion is to design the next-generation campus architecture, and he is focused on simplifying

the design and deployment of wired and wireless infrastructure. Over the last 17 years, Sanjay’s experience spans various areas including high availability; messaging in large-scale distributed systems; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA); large-scale software projects; and enterprise campus and LAN,WAN, and data center network design.

Shyam Kapadia, Ph.D., is currently a technical leader in the Data Center Group at Cisco. He graduated from the University of Southern California with Ph.D. and master’s degrees in computer science in 2006. His research interests broadly lie in the area of networking systems including wired, wireless, ad-hoc, vehicular, and sensor networks. He has co-authored several conference and journal publications in these areas including a book chapter in the relatively nascent area of intermittently connected wireless networks (http://anrg.usc.edu/~kapadia/publications.html). At Cisco, for the first few years, he was an integral part of the team that delivered the next-generation Catalyst 6500 Sup 2T platform. Padmanabhan Krishnan is a software engineer in the Data Center Group at Cisco. He joined Cisco 7 years ago and has more than 12 years of experience in various areas of networking and telecommunication. He obtained his master’s degree in computer science from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Madras University, India. His research work for the master’s degree included Diffserv, MPLS traffic engineering, and QOS routing/Connection Admission Control in ad-hoc wireless networks. Padmanabhan has worked in many overlay technologies in Cisco such as 802.1ah, TRILL, FabricPath, and VPLS. He was responsible for the design and development of the core infrastructure used by the forwarding drivers and many Layer 2 features in the next generation Catalyst 6500 Sup 2T Platform. Prior to joining Cisco, Padmanabhan worked in ATM signaling and DVB-RCS, an interactive on-demand multimedia satellite communication system specification.

Potent Introduction but could have been more.

I recently finished reading "Using TRILL, FabricPath and VXLAN:Designing Massively Scalable Data Centers with Overlays" (TFVx-MSDC). The book is written by three leading Cisco Data Center experts and it is certainly a potent introduction on MSDCs. Let me start with the positives first:

The book covers the need and benefits for MSDCs in the first chapter where authors briefly introduce all the new technologies such as TRILL, FabricPath, OTV, Leaf/Spine Architectures etc. From chapter 2 onwards, the book deep dives into specific technologies ranging from IS-IS to FabricPath and VXLAN. Last three chapters are devoted on addressing deployment and migration considerations and provided good pointers on achieving successful migrations with minimal downtimes. TFVx-MSDC is the first book on overlays and does a commendable job of covering all the major topics in this domain. I think this is one of the best complied resource one can find on FabricPath and TRILL and if your MSDC strategy includes these technologies then this book is a must read.

Now let me highlight couple of negatives as well:

I personally think the treatment of VXLAN is not as comprehensive as I expected it to be. It seems like this topic was an afterthought but authors did their best to cover it. I understand VXLAN is an evolving technology but still the treatment could have been more comprehensive. I also didn't see anything on SDN/automation which is one of the key drivers for MSDC architectures. I also didn't see any case study or design discussion on leaf-spine layer 3 based data center architecture where you don't need to run TRILL or FabricPath and OSPF/ECMP/VXLAN are used to achieve the requirements of Any-to-Any, flat forwarding and optimal east-west connectivity in the data center.

Overall I think the book is a good start on MSDCs but in the next edition, authors need to add more material in the area of SDN, VXLAN, Cisco ACI and vendor agnostic fabric architectures.

FANTASTIC DATA CENTER RESOURCE!!

Are you a CTO or CIO who wants to get familiar with the overlay technologies? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Sanjay K. Hooda, Shyam Kapadia and Padmanabhan Krishnan, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that helps you, by providing information on all of the major overlay technology options for data centers.

Authors Hooda, Kapadia and Krishnan, begin by describing the major requirements of massive scale data centers and the associated deployment challenges. Then, the authors provide a brief survey of the various overlay technologies that are employed in data center environments. They continue by providing a brief introduction to IS-IS. Then, the authors introduce FabricPath: A novel Cisco overlay solution; and, provide details of the architecture and inner workings of FabricPath, both from the point of view of control plane and data plane. They then introduce TRILL, an IETF standard, and provide details of the architecture and inner workings of TRILL. Next, the authors provide a detailed description of VXLAN, a popular MAC over IP/UDP overlay deployed in data center environments. They continue by covering the different deployment possibilities with FabricPath, along with representative examples. Then, the authors explain how the current data center deployments can be migrated to TRILL. Finally, they describe some specific deployments, where multiple overlay technologies may be employed to realize an end-to-end solution in data center environments.

In other words, this most excellent book describes data center deployments, by using overlay technologies, with emphasis on the three most popular ones: FabricPath, TRILL and VXLAN. In fact, the main goal of this great book is to provide a methodology for network architects and administrators to plan, design, and implement massive scale data centers, by using overlay technologies.

Addresses a wide range of audience including CXOs/Marketing/Biz. Dev and all the way to Engineers/Architects

I have gone through first few chapters of the book and I have to say it is extremely well written, in terms of addressing a range of audience including CXOs/Marketing/Business Development all the way to Engineers/Architects level. First two chapters were extremely valuable to me - first chapter gave an overview of data center emerging trends - it actually lists out each line item (for example, Scalability, Agility, Forwarding, etc.) and provides explanation on what each of this term means in the modern data center. It gave a good overview to me on why we are seeing all the new innovations and why new companies starting up in the Data Center space.

2nd chapter is an excellent introduction of various overlay technologies. The chapter takes an approach of what problem statement the overlay technology is trying to address, what are the requirements and what benefits customers can achieve by deploying the overlay technology - all of this without going into nitty gritty details of how it is done. This part was very helpful to me.

Rest of the book goes into details of each of the overlay technology and provides in-depth explanation including overview, architecture, packet flows, design best practices and basic configuration

Finally the book ends with a chapter dedicated to interoperability of various overlay technologies and provides some real-world case studies to exemplify the interoperability concepts.

This is an outstanding book as it addresses very well some of the most important innovations happening in the DC networking space - overlay technologies. Can't wait to read more.
