Editing sentences about strippers??!!

I bought this to possibly use for a high school writing class for homeschoolers. In the first section, it asks students to correct this sentence: "We invited the strippers Katy Perry and Jay-Z." How is this type of material appropriate, and what was Princeton Review thinking when they published it?? Needless to say, it's on it's way back to Amazon for a refund.

I question some of their rules and designations; they don't fit with what I have previously been taught, leaving me more confused than educated. I tried contacting the Princeton Review about the errors because I'm suspicious of these kinds of errors in a grammar book.

It is shocking. I have recommended that he throws it in the garbage where it belongs, and so should you.

This version of "The Present Age" also includes "On the Difference Between a Genius and an Apostle." These two treatises are two of the most intelligible and actually enjoyable of Kierkegaard's works. "The Present Age" is remarkable because, although it was written in the Nineteenth Century, it has a great deal to say about modern society. Kierkegaard's central thesis is that the modern age (that is It is important to understand, however, that K. does not mean passion as defined by the mob mentality, hate or lust. This is what Marcel, a later Existentialist, meant by "passion." Rather, he is refering to a powerful sense of inward spirituality.
Kierkegaard was a Christian (despite what philosophy professors might tell you) and the second essay in this volume is, essentially, a theological treatise on apostolic and divine authority. K. argues that Christianity is at its core an authoritatian religion. Authoritarian, that is, in the sense that the word and teachings of God have ultimate authority over man and human institutions.
This book isn't a bad place to start if one wants to read a bit of Kierkegaard. The two essays are really pretty easy to read and will surprise you with how appropriate they are to the modern and even post-modern era.

It could describe today

Written over 150 years ago, it remarkably seems to describe our age, for example "A revolutionary age is an age of action; ours is the age of advertisement and publicity. Nothing ever happens but there is immediate publicity everywhere". And those in government may appreciate "In the end a whole age becomes a committee". Perhaps the Internet is both a great leveler that Kierkegaard warned of, but also a perpetrator of the anonymous. I think Kierkegaard might laugh at some of the pseudonyms floating around the net, far less creative than his many including Johannes Climacus. Perhaps this anonymous net means no risk, but we need to "Come on, leap cheerfully, even if it means a light-hearted leap, so long as it is decisive".
This book provides a good, short intro to Kierkegaard, and the humor keeps this moving without masking the personal challenges.

Nihilism, Forfeited Individuality & The Passionless Age

Soren Kierkegaard was a contemporary and unique thinker. In "The Present Age" one finds many thoughts that are both subsequently echoed in parallel thoughts and/or have directly influenced other great thinkers. For instance Kierkegaard speaks of the danger of loosing individuality to the abstract form of public opinion. Many of his thoughts can be found in later writings of Alex de Tocqueville, Nietzsche and Heidegger. In Kierkegaard's case, true individualism is based on the Christian religion (apart from Christendom). Written over almost two hundred years ago and yet so contemporary are Kierkegaard's words to our present age of nihilism and rule of public opinion.
On Nihilism and relativism, Kierkegaard writes:
"A passionate tumultuous age will overthrow everything, pull everything down; but a revolutionary age, that is at the same time reflective and passionless, transforms that expression of strength into a feat of dialectics; it leaves everything standing but cunningly empties it of significance. Instead of culminating in a rebellion it reduces the inward reality of all relationships to a reflective tension which leaves everything standing but makes the whole of life ambiguous; so that everything continues to exist factually whilst by a dialectical deceit, privatissime, it supplies a secret interpretation - that it does not exist: p. 42
On individualism and public opinion, Kierkegaard writes:
"The abstract principle of leveling . . has no personal relation to any individual but has only an abstract relationship which is the same for every one. There, no hero suffers for others, or helps them; the taskmaster of all alike is the leveling and himself becomes greatest does not become an outstanding man or a hero - that would only impede the leveling process, which is rigidly consistent to the end - he himself prevents that from happening because he has understood the meaning of leveling; he becomes a man and nothing else, in the complete equalitarian sense. That is the idea of religion. But, under those conditions, the equalitarian order is sever and the profit is seemingly very small; seemingly, for unless the individual learns in the reality of religion and before God to be content with himself, and learns, instead of dominating others, to dominate himself, content as priest to be his own audience, and as author his own reader, if he will not learn to be satisfied with that as the highest, because it is the expression of the equality of all men before God and of our likeness to others, then he will not escape from reflection. " p.57
"The public is a concept which could not have occurred in antiquity because the people en masse, in corpore, took part in any situation which arose, and were responsible for the actions of the individual, and, moreover, the individual was personally present and had to submit at once to applause or disapproval for his decision. Only when the sense of association in society is no longer strong enough to give life to concrete realties is the Press able to create that abstraction 'the public', consisting of unreal individuals who never are and never can be united in an actual situation or organization - and yet are held together as a whole." p. 60
"The man who has no opinion of an event at the actual moment accepts the opinion of the majority, or, if he is quarrelsome, of the minority. But it must be remembered that the majority and minority are real people, and that is why the individual is assisted by adhering to them. A public, on the contrary, is an abstraction. To adopt the opinion of this or that man means that one knows that they will be subjected to the same dangers as oneself, that they will be led astray with one if the opinion leads astray. But to adopt the same opinion as the public is a deceptive consolation because the public is only there in abstracto. p.61

The late Dr. Peter Francis was a Reader in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Open University and Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii. Dr. Clive Oppenheimer is a University Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge.

A marvelous work on volcanology.

This reaches the high end of trade works on the subject, and I suggest that some exposure to the sciences, particulary physical geology, is probably appropriate before tackling this book. Having so stated, I believe this is one of the best books I have ever read on volcanoes.

The author is a person of considerable dry wit and humour, and has achieved a masterpiece by making the subject readily understandable through excellent draftsmanship. The photographs closely follow the text, and are unusually helpful.

I was particularly impressed by the fine work on the emerging science of pyroclastic flows; that most dangerous of volcanic phenomena. Notwithstanding the fact that this book is some 7 years old, the text is remarkably current, and a must for anyone interested in pyroclastic flows and their perils.

Although the author indicates otherwise in his preface, I really believe this book would be very useful as a collegiate text on the subject of volcanology. Obiously, I recommend the book very highly to all.

Still the best book on volcanoes

Though I read quite a number of books on volcanism, I'd say, this is certainly the best (hard to believe, it is already 7 years old! and still mostly up-to-date). It covers virtually all important topics in a very clear way and should be understandable not only to the specialist but also to the educated layman. It contains certainly the best review of extraterrestrial volcanism I have read so far, though there are books specifically dedicated to that topic. 5 stars galore!

Excellent review of eruptions and explanation of physical basis of volcanism

This the very interestingly writen book, in which physical backgrounds of the volcanic phenomena are explained very accessibly. Particularly interesting are vivid descriptions of several, the most known, explosve eruptions and explanations of the physical bases of pyrocalstic currents. The book contains numerous fascinating photographs, well illustrating the described events. It would be advantageous if they were published in colour.

Great Parallel Bible

I have for a while wanted to get the NIV and Amplified Bibles, having years back got the KJV and the NASB.

This Classic Comparative Bible is very nice indeed, Zondervan have done a great job of putting the four translations together in a good, easy read format.

you get a very nice brown bonded leather cover. inside theres table of contents, Intros to each translation (but no introductions to the individual books of the Bible). brief (translational) notes on some pages. At the back table of weights and measures, no maps.

The four translations are on facing pages, two per page, in column, 8point font. Zondervan have done a good job of formatting.

I'm a Catholic and have for a while wanted to get a NIV, having already a KJV and NASB, (so far I would match the NIV with the Catholic NABRE Bible, both are 'optimal' translations, Between formal and dynamic.

And it comes nicely boxed to protect it during shipping.

Best parallel Bible out there

The text is laid out in the order the translations are listed. From left to right NIV(2011), KJV, NASB and AMP.

There are no cross references (except for those in the AMP text), study notes or concordance. It is simply the word of God in 4 translations. Preceding the Old Testament is the prefaces to all 4 translations although for the KJV it has the epistle dedicatory to King James which is wrongly titled as the preface. The preface to the KJV is called the translators to the reader and is not contained in this Bible. After the end of Revelation at the back of the Bible there is a table of weights and measures.

I have the burgundy bonded leather edition. To be honest when I first got it 8 months ago I was not impressed with the quality. After using the Bible the bonded leather would stick up and not stay down. But after giving it some use it has now broken in nicely and the cover now stays down after using the Bible. I wish they offered this in genuine leather, but the bonded leather will suffice after breaking it in.

The NIV and AMP both contain the full translators notes but disappointingly none of the translators notes for the KJV are included and a very limited amount of the NASB's translators notes are included. I'd have preferred the words of Jesus in red but it's understandable that with such a huge Bible they decided not to. On a personal note I'd prefer the NKJV instead of the NIV, I believe you'd then have the 4 best translations for study in 1 book but 3 out of 4 isn't bad. They have done an excellent job with the type size, it maybe difficult for some but making it larger would make the Bible too big(the only Bible I've seen that is as big is the large print MacArthur study bible). But for most the type size will be fine. I own a KJV/NKJV parallel Bible and the type in this 4 translation parallel is actually bigger than the one in that parallel bible!

Overall having searched all of the parallel bibles out there, I believe this is the best one available. If they replaced the NIV with the NKJV and included all the translators notes for all the translations this would be my perfect parallel bible. But the NIV still has value as it's so widely used. I combine this with a Thompson Chain NKJV and now I need no other bible.

This bible is a MUST HAVE for those like me who rather have it all at a glance

Previously to this bible, I had to use separate versions in order to conduct my studies in the word. This bible is a MUST HAVE for those like me who rather have it all at a glance. The bonded leather and burgundy color are as indicated and further compliment the quality of this bible. The pages are as delicate as traditionally seen on all other quality bibles. The versions are side-by-side at a glance for quick interpretation of what you are reading. I am going to enjoy this bible and GOD's word for years to come or until HE does! The words of Jesus should have been written in red as other bibles do which would have made this wonderful creation an OUTSTANDING one, but it's a excellent bible nonetheless and serves it's purpose like no other. This is a GREAT bible to have.

Maria Isabel finds it hard to respond to a name that does not seem like hers. Her teacher doesn't understand why it is so difficult for her to answer to "Mary" until the child is inspired to address her paper on "My Greatest Wish" to the topic of her name. The result is not only a happy ending, but also an affirming study of heritage and how it is integrally bound up in an individual's sense of self. When Mar�a Isabel Salazar L�pez's family moves, there are already two Mar�as in her new class, so the teacher decides to call her Mary L�pez. Since she doesn't readily recognize this new name, Mar�a Isabel is continually scolded for being inattentive; worse, her pride in being named for her grandmothers is dishonored. Mar�a Isabel's reluctance to assert her wish to be called by her full name involves her in an apparent web of deception when she doesn't get a part in a pageant (she doesn't recognize her name when the teacher is assigning roles) but lets her parents believe she'll participate. Fortunately, an essay assignment provides a solution: she finds the courage to write that her ``greatest wish is to be called Mar�a Isabel Salazar L�pez,'' clearly explaining her reasons; and her teacher responds generously to her plea. Super Story for Teachers

I read this book in college as a part of a book club required by the school. I loved this book as soon as I read it. It can teach teachers how to be culturally sensative to all their students. A name is a very important possession to most of us. It is an only possession to some children. It is also good for those teachers who are stuck thinking that children "should just learn our language" when in reality it is a long process. I would like to recommend this book to those who are teaching children ESL and those regular classroom teachers who have ESL students in their rooms. I loved it!

Lots of great lessons in this book

My Name is Mar�a Isabel is the story of a little girl facing a difficult problem when she is forced to change schools mid-year. At her new school, her teacher decides to call her Mary because there are already two girls named Mar�a in the class. Mar�a Isabel does not want to be called Mary but she doesn't know how to tell her teacher. She consistently fails to respond when the teacher calls on her in class because she doesn't recognize Mary as her name. This leads to the teacher assuming that she does not want to participate in the school's Winter Pageant. When the teacher has the students write an essay titled, My Greatest Wish, Mar�a Isabel gets her chance to say how she feels.

This book would be appropriate for ages 8 and 9. Children in this age group are beginning to develop empathy for others, and an understanding of right and wrong. Most children will be able to relate to facing a problem and not knowing what to do about it. I would use this book for a read-aloud in a school setting as part of a discussion about cultural sensitivity and awareness. I would also recommend it to kids to read for enjoyment.

The artwork consists of black and white pencil or charcoal drawings placed sporadically throughout the text. The drawings are placed consistently with the text that they refer to and they are culturally accurate. The illustrator also added elements of Mar�a Isabel's thoughts into many of the pictures. For example, when Mar�a Isabel is reading Charlotte's Web and feeling as if she is caught her own spider's web, there is a drawing of her in bed reading with shadows of a spider's web on the wall behind her.

How do you solve a problem like....?

A sweet story that kids will easily identify with. I found this book very easy for a small child to understand, and I appreciated the theme that any kid can take to heart. Not fitting in and the fear of not being liked by one's superior (in this case, a teacher) is a universal theme. The fact that Maria gets saddled with an incompetent teacher from the start doesn�t help matters for her anyway. As much as I�d like to rail against the idea of a teacher changing her student�s name because, �We already have two Marias in this class�, I know that there is no lack of incompetent, yet well meaning, teachers in the world who�d do this very thing. It isn�t entirely clear in the story why it is that Maria doesn�t discuss her problems with her parents or her teacher. People reading this book to children should make it clear that Maria would have dealt with a lot less misery if she had simply told someone why she felt badly. And some kids may wish for a more concrete ending than the one offered here. Why doesn�t the teacher apologize to Maria? In any case, this book might fit in well with other stories of new kids in school. Even the Ramona Quimby books would pair nicely, as a very different little girl dealing with school and her teacher.
