William Lutz, a professor of English at Rutgers University and former editor of the Quarterly Review of Doublespeak, has had enough of doublespeak--the inflated, involved and often deliberately ambiguous use of language or when "strategic misinterpretations" are used instead of lies. He argues that the practice has been growing in our culture, and he's right. In this book he reviews doubletalk by Democrats, Republicans, journalists, economists and Supreme Court justices, and shows how the repeated use of a phrase allows it to stay unchallenged in the lexicon. Say what you mean, argues Lutz, and we'll all be better off.

YA. This is the second book by the doublespeak detective who entertains, angers, and motivates with his continuing exposure of the nonsense language that pervades the public atmosphere. With brevity, clarity, and wit, Lutz explains that doublespeak is language that makes the bad seem good, the negative appear positive, the unpleasant appear attractive or at least tolerable. A tax increase, for example, is not a tax increase, but rather "revenue enhancement," "wage-based premium," "user fee," or "passenger facility charge." Workers are never laid off; they're "redundant," "transitioned," or offered "voluntary severance," or, as in the computer industry, they're "uninstalled." The author talks about fuzzy thinking, labels and mental maps, signs and symbols as well as cognitive dissonance in ways that are easily understood and humorously illustrated. His purpose is to help readers identify ways in which we are ripped off, hoodwinked, and otherwise manipulated by others due to the pervasive influence and acceptance of doublespeak. Lots of white space and relatively large type make the book readable. William Lutz's book should be required reading in every class that is used to meet the college undergraduate critical thinking requirement. He formalizes a means of detecting and dealing with "double-speak;" and double-speak, unfortunately, is a part of eveyday life in this country.
An excellent book, after reading a copy from the college library, I am buying a copy for my home library.

Incredible and very useful

I bought this for my adult children to read so they could start to understand the amount of lying that they have grown up in.
Our culture has changed so much in the last 100 years in the way they communicate. It has been toward vagueness to be considered politically correct. If you tell the truth these days you are called judgement, intolerant and on and on. We have declined into a moral abyss.

A Gem of a Book

This book is a gem. I've referred to it often over the past few years and incorporated it into my writing and presentations on the importance of clarity in communication. What I particularly find helpful are the colorful, humorous, insightful and sometimes scary examples Lutz incorporates into the book that show how manipulative language is used in politics, business and many other areas of our daily lives. If you want to improve your communication skills, whether professionally, personally or both, this book is an excellent guide on what not to do. It also serves as an important reminder that today, the art of doublespeak is unfortunately alive and well.

Nothing Special

My 15 month old is obsessed with polar bears right now but he was unimpressed by this book. I bought it because it was an "Award-Winning New York Times Bestseller" but I guess a really good marketing team is all it takes because even I thought the pictures and story line was a little boring.

Combining a spare, rhythmic text with a stunning series of narrative paintings, it tells the story of Harriet Tubman, who escaped from slavery but returned to the South 19 times to lead more than 300 people to freedom in the North. "Some were afraid, / But none turned back, / For close at their heels / Howled the bloodhound pack." Like the words, the pictures are full of urgency and directed movement; the figures--stark, strong, and simplified--blend in shape and color with the forest world that hides them and helps them escape to the North. Harriet is like a great protective angel; her brown hand, huge and powerful, is like the spreading roots and branches of the trees. And always the North Star shines at the top edge of the painting to light the runaways' flight to freedom. Two heroes

First published in 1968, this artistic book tells the awe-inspiring story of Harriet Tubman. It ought to be on the list of children's bestsellers, for it gives children the stories of two American heroes for the price of one. The first is the title figure, Harriet Tubman (1820-1913), who escaped from slavery but courageously returned south 19 times to lead more than 300 others to freedom. The second is Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000), who made this magnificent series of illustrations in 1939 and 1940.
The text is poetic. Early in the story, on a hot summer day in about 1820, "a group of slave children were tumbling in the sandy soil in the state of Maryland," Harriet Tubman among them. She dreamed of freedom and escaped, but returned to help others. The story builds as the selfless African-American leader risked her life many times to help others reach freedom. "Some were afraid, / But none turned back, / For close at their heels / Howled the bloodhound pack."
As the story closes, young readers find an enthralling figure of Harriet Tubman building support for the anti-slavery movement. At every convention within 500 miles, she could be found speaking in words and tones that brought tears to the eyes and sorrow to the hearts of all listeners.
Lawrence's paintings, made in tempera colors and poster paints, are poetic, too. Trained in the art workshops of Harlem in the 1930s, including the Utopia Children's House and the Harlem Art Workshop (sponsored by the New Deal), Lawrence became one of the finest African-American artists in U.S. history. His extraordinary talent was recognized when he was still relatively young.
Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he moved to Easton, Pennsylvania and then at seven to Philadelphia. At 13, Jacob moved again, to Harlem. Drawing on Bible stories and the powerful Christian sermons, often given on street corners, Lawrence remembered orators who spoke with reverence of Harriet Tubman and determined to show the African-American struggle for freedom in his art.
The Tubman series was one of Lawrence's earliest. It predated by only a couple of years the 60-panel migration series that made Lawrence's career in 1941-42. Half that series was bought by the Philips Gallery in Washington D.C. and the other half by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
But Lawrence's Tubman work is among his best. This book's only shortcoming is that it does not reproduce all of the Tubman paintings. Several were excluded and can be seen only in an art museum, or the pages of an art catalogue. But don't let that stop you. Children will find themselves doubly enriched. Alyssa A. Lappen

Does every book need words? I love it!

This beautiful book tells the story of Harriet Tubman's life in pictures by Lawrence. The story is simply written but the art is the true draw. Many students know the story of Tubman before they get to 8th grade. I use this text to practice a prediction strategy. I had students only look at the pictures and write an outline for the story of the book. The stories were quite interesting, but all seemed to twist their stories to be about Tubman in the end. It makes a great short story portfolio piece.

This children's book helps us to better understand the true feelings of an African-American person in the south. It is great for those of us who don't really have a grasp of what was going on.

About the Author
Yanagita Kunio (1875–1962) was the founder of Japanese folklore studies. Sasaki Kizen (1886–1933) was a native of Tono and an avid collector of folk legends. Together they compiled and published The Legends of Tono in Japanese. Ronald A. Morse was Terasaki Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently a director of the Sangikyo Corporation.

Stories that Challenge the Imagination

For anyone who wants to get the flavor of what it was like to live in a remote peasant Japanese village a century ago, this book is a must read. Tono is a cluster of remote mountain villages in northern Japan. This "new" collection of tales from Tono has 299 stories and covers a greater variety of topics than the first collection of tales translated as "The Legends of Tono" in 2008. For those who enjoy folk legends, they will also find this collection quite similar to the early German Grimm Brothers stories: not too polished and much closer to the way that a local villager might narrate tales. This book was clearly edited with care: it is very readable, nicely illustrated in just the right places, has a good glossary of terms, and for those who (like me) are interested in this sort of thing, the book offers a great variety of insights into peasant farmer psychology and society. There is also a bio-sketch of Sasaki Kizen, the Tono villager and folklorist who put the tale collection together.

In this book he provides a cogent, balanced, and objective evaluation of the strategy behind the Global War on Terror, avoiding the polemics so often found in such discussions. Tan not only considers the mistakes that have been made in response to the attacks of 9/11 - most obviously the ill-fated invasion of Iraq in 2003 - but he leaves little doubt that the invasion of Iraq, unlike the preceding invasion of Afghanistan, led to increases in terrorist activities and led to generalized discontent and doubts about the United States among Muslims. Tan goes further, however, and notes the improvements that made been made in US counterinsurgency strategies in efforts to deal with terrorism around the world. Finally, he looks to the future and notes what additional changes will be necessary to contain, but not defeat, the current terrorist threats. Insightful Primer on the Free Market System

This tiny book is an excellent primer for anyone who wanted to know more about Free Market Economics. It does a very good job of explaining tariffs and subsidies and how that affects the market as a whole. The book is written like a story, with one character trying to convince another of something that he shouldn't do (you'll have to read it to find out what). Overall, I think this is a good book for juvenile and adult alike who know very little to nothing about the economics of a free market.

Wish "It's a Wonderful Life" were more like this

I don't really consider this a work of fiction, and neither does the author. It is in a fiction format, but its primary purpose is to make the case against protectionism, and for free markets. Roberts does this beautifully, raising and dismissing almost every argument for protectionism, and doing this with charm, wit, and almost a complete lack of venom.

The story follows the time-traveling journey and conversation of Ed Johnson (a businessman looking for protection form Japanese competition) and his guardian angle David Ricardo (modeled after the little-known economist.) Together they travel to the future, back to the past, and through alternate timelines to demonstrate Robert's point.

Through this journey, Ricardo corrects some critical mistakes in economic theory; such as the `zero-sum theory', misconceptions on the nature of supply and demand, the role and meaning of wages and `real' wages, the mythical "dangers" of a trade deficit, what imports and exports really are, and most of all, dismisses the myth that trade with other countries hurts the American worker overall (which he admits, in a smaller sense, it sometimes does.)

The book takes some leaps of logic, which the author fully admits in the back of the book; such as the town of Star (Ed's hometown) being unchanged in the `protectionist' universe. These little plot devices are not meant to represent reality, but demonstrate more abstract points, in that sense, it is more like a metaphor.

Overall, the book makes one of the strongest cases ageists the practicality of protectionism that I have ever heard. He also fits some talk as to the moral case against it, that it is really an issue of freedom, and no one person has the right to force another in to a certain kind of behavior (A.K.A., buying American products) and that "America" is all about dreams and growth, something not very possible in the protectionist world

My only complaint would be that I wanted more elaboration on some sections of the `conversation'; such as the `dumping' segment. Robert's makes a good case that dumping is not really practical for anybody, that the `dumper' would have to make up for lost profits from lowering their prices. What I don't understand is....what if a company could cover their lost profits in profits from another product, or section of their company (Such as a department store lowering prices on televisions and allowing the produce-department to cover the loss.) I wish Robert's would have gone in to slightly more detail.

There are several section of the book like this; but I want to make clear is that Robert's never claims that this is the ultimate source for `anti-protectionist' arguments, he even suggests further reading in the back of the book, something all reasonable people should do if they are truly interested in understanding the complexities of economics.

I love Robert's style of writing, his books are not just informative, but entertaining, something very hard to achieve for this subject matter. The book was good enough that I ordered His other book, The Invisible Heart, form Amazon. After seeing what he did to It's a Wonderful life, I can't wait to see what he does for a romance novel.

The author really did a great job of explaining a complex topic in a simple way for an average person to understand. Economics is a social science and can be complex due to the pressures coming from several forces such as public policy, supply, demand, etc. This should be a mandatory requirement for any Political Science or Macro Economics class to read.

Befriended by members of a local tribe, the newly named Green Thumb must fight to stop the deadly Embryo Project and save his own life. Thomas has created a middle-school version of his earlier heroes, a joking smart aleck whose humor draws readers into his world. Too sure of his own intelligence, Grady is bored by school and anyone his own age, especially the local bullies. His botanical research has been conducted like his social lifecold, clinical, and as faraway from others as possible. Traveling deep into the Amazon to join the mysterious Wood Stock project for a summer job, two-time National Science Fair^-winner Grady Jacobs learns that the project head, Phillip Carter, has genetically engineered a tree that grows with prodigious speed, and can therefore serve as a quick replacement for clear-cut rain forest. Unfortunately, the tree also poisons animals and other plants--a fact Carter will go to any length, including murder, to hide. Grady soon finds himself a fugitive, pursued not only by Carter but also by his blowgun-and machete-wielding minions, the Kel-Ha-Nitiba. Trying to stay alive long enough to gather proof of Carter's perfidy, Grady spends roughly equal time swinging through the trees like Tarzan and hunched over his laptop, ferreting out hidden computer files. Readers won't be able to turn the pages fast enough; Thomas stirs generous quantities of both violence and low comedy into a breakneck escapade that, by the end, leaves Carter dead, his plot exposed, and Grady, whose physical exertions have converted him from marshmallow to manly man, fully ready to take on his nemeses in high school. GREEN THUMB!!!

2-time national science fair winner, 13 year-old Grady Jacobs is kind of a nerd in school because he is "smart," but doesn't seem to care too much about it. He is going to spend the summer with a famous botanist, Dr. Phillip Carter, in the Amazon rain forest. They have to try to save the rain forest with some new type of "super tree," before it dies out. His job is mostly to cook, but he discovers something amazing, a system of sounds that lets him to control the trees, kind of like a language. He then discovers that Carters "super trees" aren't helping the Amazon, they're hurting it. Hurting it to the point where they're killing it. When some one finds out about what Grady is doing, and the experiments he is taking, he runs away from Carter's camp, and camps with the Urah-wau Indian tribe. Can he stop Carter from using his "super trees" in the rainforest?

Junior high intellectual turns hero in fun adventure

I'm a big fan of Rob Thomas and this book did not disappoint. I'm also really glad it's directed at the younger reader since junior high kids have probably missed his other titles. (Rats Saw God, Slave Day, Satellite Down) The main character, Grady, is instantly likable while we witness him outwitting his football-star bullies by covertly pelting them with spitballs covered in hair remover. These bullies have beat him up for the last time, however, when he travels to the Amazon rain forest as part of a tree-growing research team. He loses his extra weight & puts on muscle. Not to mention saving the jungle from a mad scientist. It's a fun story that teens will love, with a main character that some may identify with. Keep 'em coming, Rob!!

Grady is a very smart kid and because of it he is asked to spend a couple of weeks with a famous botanist. They are planing to save the forest with special trees. Grady discovers away to speak with the trees with different sounds. He finds out that the trees aren't helping the environment, they're killing it. When people figure out what grady is doing, he runs away. He camps with some indians. Grady teams up with the indians to try to save the rainforest. Can they do it, or will they fail?

About the Author
Wendy Barnes has worked very hard to create a "normal" life for herself. She holds down a full-time job and lives with her daughter in Orange County, California. Grateful to have a close
relationship with her brothers, sister, and kids, she loves the simple, calm life with occasional
visits from her sons and family trips to Disneyland. She enjoys helping other survivors understand that healing is a lifelong journey, but one that can be achieved with commitment,
good choices, and a heart open to accepting a helping hand here and there along the way.

All criminal court lawyers should read this book.

With this powerful memoir, trafficking survivor Wendy Barnes casts off the cloak from the shadow-world. Her inspiring story also compels those of us who work in criminal justice to reexamine our handling of these cases. Are we doing all we can for our clients? Are we helping, or hurting?

The author invites us to enter the justice system we claim to know so well -- only this time, to come without power, frightened, handcuffed, anxious for any good news. We are to stand there naked of our years of experience, devoid of our special training, and rely entirely on others to explain all....It was difficult for this former public defender even to imagine such a position, but Barnes' eloquent storytelling bridges that gap, slipping the reader's feet into her shoes so deftly, we do not even realize it has happened until we are trembling. She is a gifted writer, and I rejoice that she has found her voice and determined to share it with us.

At one point, Wendy's defense attorney counseled her to accept a deal which, at the time, seemed golden. Though the author never directly criticizes her lawyer, I saw plainly, as I continued to read, that her plea had tremendous ramifications which would take several years and a legitimately Herculean effort to overcome. I don't know what happened in Wendy's courtroom, or whether any better options were ever realistic in her case; but it does seem clear that Wendy did not fully appreciate the terms of her plea bargain when it was tendered.

Legal professionals know the rules; we know what sort of information we are required to share with our clients. But are we really ensuring defendants understand what we are saying? Are we too caught up in our own workloads to appreciate the magnitude of a single case to a single defendant's life? This book doesn't ask these questions directly, but I hope it will push lawyers to ask them of themselves.

WOW! Could not put it down

Once I started the book, I did not put it down until I was finished. You will see what I mean when you start reading it.
Wendy has spent the last ten years developing how to tell this story in a way that describes how believing in yourself and getting the right people around you WILL get a person to where they want to be in life. She has written many books before and now with her incredible editor Susan, she has done it.
While reading this book, you will begin to understand the torture and mental prison that people from human trafficking feel, why “just making the choice to get out of this world” is not as simple as it sounds and most important, she shows you that it is possible to get out of human trafficking.
In the end, you will not only see that life continues – it continues in freedom.

This is the best sex trafficking memoir

I've read pretty much every memoir that's been written about sex trafficking. This is one of the most realistic and certainly the best written. If you want to understand what it's really like, from someone who's really lived it, this is the book to read.
