This should be required reading!

I really enjoyed reading this book. As a nurse of 15+ years and currently a student studying public health, I was intrigued when one of my professors recommended this book. The title threw me off balance--what does how we treat animals have to do with public health? I admit my focus (up to this point) was rather narrow and I was just concerned with how I can better care for my patients. This book broadened my horizons as to all the areas of public health I was unaware of (there are so many!). Of course I read the news and am aware of most of the animal issues that the author discussions, but I NEVER made a connection between those animal issues and public health. I'll be using this book in my studies and writings and I recommend it to other public health students. This should be required reading!

A critical public health perspective

As a public health professional working in disaster preparedness, I find Dr. Akhtar's text thought-provoking and germane to so many health issues facing our nation. Katrina highlighted the importance of considering pet rescue as an effective part of public health preparedness planning. It is now a widely accepted necessity in disaster preparedness. Foodborne outbreaks kill people every year. But, we can prevent a large number of them through correcting common industry practices. We, as a nation, are not prepared to give up our myriad relationships with animals. But, as Dr. Akhtar points out again and again, we can have a profound impact on public health if we reform and improve upon them.

Excellent Book

I got this book as a gift from a "friend" who thought it might give me pause for thought - she is forever hopeful that I might become the fine human she thought she was setting her life up with but that's another story.

Anyway, I am a very open minded person but must admit have been pretty resolutely in the camp of "humans are at the top for a reason". As I said, I am open minded but the normal arguments in favor of better treatment for animals really flies in the face of the fact that to harvest animals for food, clothing, medical testing etc is really a horribly brutal Business (note the big B because it is not a matter of organic family farms but I accepted that) and if you are for it, you need to accommodate your feelings to accept this.

That being said however, I have come to a very different if very complicated understanding and conclusion after reading Dr. Akhter's book. Its actually almost painful because I now have to re-assess many things that I thought I had moved past in terms of animals. In some ways, I wish I hadnt read the book but the book is a pretty compelling page turner and in truth it elevated some of my own concerns that I thought i had put to rest. I think the book accomplishes this because it is not preaching and Dr. Akhtar shows her obvious understanding of the linkages between our treatment of animals and our own well being as individual humans and as a society.

My goal now is to try and get a few friends to read the book because it is a game changer in terms of realigning your thinking in a very concrete way to other goals you may have regarding your health, the environment, and society but which you realize are not going to materialize unless there is some compelling action that is very contrary to what you have become accustomed to.

Great book Dr. Akhtar and will be looking for more from you. Thank you.

Spellbinding new series!

I knew Dark Veil was going to be a spellbinding read just from the first paragraphs posted on S.L. Naeole's website. A fan of her prior work including the Grace Series and Gossamer I've always found it a shame that her work hasn't caught the attention of more readers. She's a master story crafter with fluid prose and enough twists and turns to avoid being formulaic.

To my glee I actually won an advance copy of Dark Veil through a contest on her website and I devoured it in a single sitting - not because it was short but because I was trapped in the world of Black Cat Rock and had no desire to escape. I liked it so much I actually purchased it when released as well in appreciation for her hard work.

I've wanted to write a glowing review for several months but the problem was how to do the novel justice without introducing any spoilers. It's just that good and the only true 5 star novel I've read in sometime. I'm a voracious reader of paranormal romance, averaging 2 books per week and a writer as well so I don't give 5 stars easily.

This novel gives us a fresh twist on shapeshifters in an isolated colony of panthers or panthus as they refer to themselves off the coast of Maine. Their life is not the stuff of dreams but a gritty and often lonely existence. The male lead, Liam, is swoon-worthy but flawed, making no apologies for it.

Our heroine, Fallon, is an outsider to the island returning with her adoptive parents who fled the island decades earlier. She's not shy or waiting to blossom magically as we so so often in young adult paranormal novels but a confident young woman who loves to spend time working on cars and motorcycles with her Dad.

Chapters are narrated by both Fallon and Liam in first person which I felt really let me into their thoughts and put me in the middle of the action. Our lead characters are beautifully developed.

Dark Veil also takes on complex subject matter and some mature issues not typically seen in a young adult paranormal romance. It is though provoking and poignant and can keep a teen or adult audience enthralled.

Other novels have joked about the lion falling in love with the lamb but in this case Liam literally falls in love with his food. It gives new definition to star-crossed lovers and it has me rooting for a way for them to find their happily ever after.

While not a cliff hanger not all questions are answered in this novel and some issues are left unresolved but that's OK. You finish the novel eagerly anticipating the sequel to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle.

In summary I'd encourage anyone who likes young adult or adult paranormal romance and is tired of the same old formula flooding the markets to read Dark Veil. It will have you thinking about it long after the last page is read and waiting anxiously for the sequel.

Sooo, I don't know where to start as I have so many things to say! First, I was up till 4am reading this book! I devoured it in 8 hours! I woke up this morning thinking about the book, and the characters, so I have a lot on my mind! The book is still lingering through me, and that just means that Mrs. Naeole has captured me with her talented writting, yet again! So be prepared for a long review as I will gush about the author!

This book is different from any book that I've read in this genre! I follow the author on FB, and on her website and we got glimpsed of the first few chapters before it was released. The story was so intriguing, I didn't have a clue what kind of book it was going to be! Dark Veil, is a book about Fallon, an adopted girl that moves back with her parents to their home town. Little does she know about her parent's secret and the secret behind the habitants of Black Cat Rock, and she will find out and see at first hand!
Like I said before, the story is intriguing as so are the characters! There is a dark side to this story but in a good way. If you read S.L Naoele, don't expect that she will be sugar coating anything! Her stories won't be prissy, princess like kind of story! This story is raw, and so are the characters. She is not afraid to take things a step further or even talk about taboo topics, in which the story does mention some life issues that most people would not be comfortable discussing or reading. But that's what I love about her, that she has an edge and she incorporates it into her story! Although, the topics are sprinkled through the book, they are things and issues that younger and older teens may face...real life issues!
What I really love about this book is that the story alternates from Fallon's and Liam's POV! You get a better understanding of these two main characters! Her characters are unconventional, they are not your typical stereotype kind of characters, she takes away exterior beauty and strips them down to their core, she leaves them raw,she let's you see their interior beauty, their conflicts and their faults! Her writing is like a river, it flows, it navigates you, it grasps on to you until you take a cliff dive along with the characters! The emotions on these two characters jumps up from the pages. She activates your 5 senses, Its like you smell, you feel their fear, their anger, their passion! It is pure talent!
I've read all of Ms.Naeole's books, and I've just seen her improve, she gets better and better. I feel that with each book, we get to know her more, as I feel that she leaves a tiny bit of her in all the characters! The story and writing was flawless and I can't wait to see what happens next! I really can't wait for the 2nd installment of this series! I hope is not a long wait as I need more Fallon and Liam!

Great start to a great new series! The cat's meow!

I was lucky enough to win an advance review copy of this book. Like every other book by this author, I wasn't able to put it down. Fallon is a girl like any other girl. She's the adopted daughter of two loving parents, both in the military, and she's had an "army brat's" life - up until now. Both her parents are retiring and moving her to their hometown. Of course, things aren't always as they seem, and as quickly as Fallon makes a friend, she makes an enemy - only she isn't aware of what having an enemy in this town will mean. Without throwing out spoilers, this isn't like your regular paranormal romance. It has a great twist. I love Fallon's tom-boy, yet still a girl, character. I love Audrey, and how even with her... limitations... she's a good friend. I also love the conflict that Liam has within himself. Without adding spoilers to the story, let's just say that I really enjoyed this story. I can't wait to read the next installment.

He'll Show You The Life Of The Mind

Alfred Cedeno's imaginative, dystopian novel is the story of Rey Pescador, a talented, playboy poet who struggles to find contentment and spiritual fulfillment in a technologically advanced but morally exhausted world. As much satirical as it is fantastical, The Resurrection of Rey Pescador parodies the deification of celebrity and wealth, and it challenges its readers to question the value of a prolonged physical existence at the expense of a mature emotional and religious one.

As an epistolary novel, the book projects an intimate, a vulnerable, and (as much as one can be when talking about one's life and the lives of close friends) an honest voice. Father David Rosario (the novel's narrator) is an earnest man who often overlooks his hypocrisy in favor of demanding that the world address its own. At times, Rosario and Pescador repel with their entitlement, but because we are privy to Rosario's thoughts we can recognize in his mind our insecurities and doubts. In other words, Cedeno attempts to clarify universal human dilemmas by way of setting strange characters in a strange reality; still, these characters are true to human nature: they lust and love, they anger and forgive, they covet and share, and they boast and praise.

Despite the profundity of the subject matter, the novel is quite humorous. Pescador's globetrotting exploits are absurd. His friends comprise an ironically named Genius Brigade, who are as recognized and rich in Cedeno's reality as musicians, athletes, and politicians are in our reality. Much of the humor is linked with the disconnect between how beloved these characters are and how childishly they behave.

While The Resurrection of Rey Pescador is not a perfect book - there are issues with pacing (the inciting incident takes place nearly 100 pages in) and dialogue (at times clunky and repetitive) - it is an intriguing and promising first novel. As Cedeno continues to write and develop his unique style, I will continue to follow his career.

Amazing and Prolific!

This book is an epic story filled with adventure, intrigue, romance, and big questions. It's profound and poetic though, a story and writer for those who love classics that don't always fit the pretty modern molds of contemporary books. Like my favorite movies and novels, this story by Mr. Cedeno leaves questions unanswered in what seems to be an intelligent purposeful effort to spurn the readers imagination.

How refreshing to find this kind of writing amidst a sea of fast-paced watered-down fiction. It's got dystopian themes. Everyone has these mechanical hearts. It's got sci-fi, larger-than-life themes. And it's also got a subtle inviting romance.

Mostly though, I love the friendship between David Rosario and Rey Pescador, who also happen to be cousins. I love the ups and downs they experience. Times of hate and love, but an underlying mutual respect for each other.

The Genius Brigade is so fascinating. The tight-knit group these two are a part of along with one other character. I want to know more about them. I want to know what happens to Sid Cutler, who in my mind represents the devil himself.

The book is well-written and the storyline is profound, not for those looking for a quick summer read that is forgotten as soon as another book is picked up. This is a story that will stay with you. Characters you'll want to know more about because you feel like you grow to know them personally as you read.

The ending... Perfect. Really can't praise this book enough. Just read it and see for yourselves.

While I believe all we need is the GOSPEL to convert any one, any where, as Paul did....I also understand the misconception of "Gematria" and appreciate your discoveries on the subject, I also agree with what you found... It is hard to find others that are "scripturally sound" but who also appreciate God's enormous mark in the world we see and can understand with our finite minds....
The signature of our God and Creator is found everywhere, in mathematics, language, nature and the universe....the heart that loves discovery of glimpses of His glory- that does not meet study with a closed mind, or trust in tradition to reveal all the evidence He has left for us, will be awed by His great majesty and intelligence that infiltrates every created thing examinable....but because others have twisted and spoke beyond what is written and even made religions out of concepts, it is hard to express the 'TRUTH" of what we have found to those with skeptical minds. Your book will reach many of those skeptics! With an extended family who practice Judaism and who seem to rely more on Rabbinical tradition than the actual WORD of God for understanding, it is my prayer for all Jews, Muslims and Kabbalists, that they might search with an open mind and prayerful heart the scriptures in the OLD and NEW that pertain to the Moshiach. The Late MURRAY R. SPIEGEl received the M.S degree in Physics and the Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cornell University. He had positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge and Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large Companies. His last Position was professor and Chairman of mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Hartford Graduate Center. He was interested in most branches of mathematics at the Rensselaer polytechnic Institute, Hartford Graduate Center. He was interested in most branches of mathematics, especially those which involve applications to physics and engineering problems. He was the author of numerous journal articles and 14 books on various topics in mathematics.

Not for Engineers

This books looks like it was written by a mathematician for math students. I'm not saying that's bad, but with the screaming title, I feel like it will attract a lot of engineering students looking for help in their lower division engineering classes where Laplace Transforms are an integral part of the course. This text is not your best choice.
Looking @ the titles of some of the 8 chap. should make you suspicious:
Chap. 2 - The Inverse Laplace Transform,
Chap. 3 - Applications to Differential Equations,
Chap. 4 - Applications to Integral & Difference Equations,
Chap. 5 - Complex Variable Theory,
Chap. 7 - The Complex Inversion Formula,
Chap. 8 - Application to Boundary-Value Problems.
It's my guess that if your're an undergraduate engineering student (particularly EE), you're looking for a little less of Lerch's & Green's theorems, complex variable theory, & working inverse Laplace transforms by hand, and instead more engineering explanations of the complex S-plain, what's really happening when an f(t) is transposed into an F(s), how does the little function "e" raised to the "-st" power perform its magic, how does Laplace & Fourier transform differ, how does this relate to Phasors, & how can I solve many engineering problems without having to even write differential equations? In other words, you probably don't need another terse, yet cold math book. What you may be looking for is something that addresses S-Domain circuit/system analysis written from the engineering point of view.
One suggestion, staying with Schaum's, is SIGNALS and SYSTEMS where Hsu does an OK job with engineering transforms including Laplace. It's more systems oriented than circuits, but you'll get a better feel for the application of transforms to engineering problems & the engineering math behind them from this book.
