It's a very basic book. It can easily be read in a day, but there was some solid research behind this book which makes it worth taking the things they say into practice and awareness.

Was "average-ly" good.

A lot of the content in this book especially towards the end are redundant to the content that is introduced in the beginning. The concepts are repeated, and it seems as if the author has a strong bias towards baseball as the sport of example, followed by football and soccer, when there are many other sports out there. Most of the views on "parents of athletes" are one-sided from the coach's perspective, without taking into consideration as to why athlete's parents behave the way they do at practices or games given their different backgrounds. Overall, this book was a good read for simple young athlete coaching concepts.

He focuses particularly on the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that drives motivation, monitors homeostasis, and ultimately keeps us alive via neural, autonomic, and hormonal adjustments. He presents evidence that long-run growth can be attributed to variances in hypothalmic activity.A physioeconomic approach to growth can lead to better economic policies, measures of performance, and predictions of progress. To take just one example, policymakers would be quicker to realize that food aid to warmer regions can destroy local farming economies that supply adequate caloric needs at a lower steady state.

10 years ahead of its time

At the time he wrote it (yes, Phil Parker produces many books by algorithm, but this was not one of them), this book was far ahead of its time. The observation that latitude correlated to economic performance (farther north = higher GDP per capita) was dismissed as a quirk until recently. But now there is a large and growing literature on it in economics: the effect seems quite real. As I write this, I'm sitting in a seminar by Geoffrey Heal from Columbia on this topic. Even year by year, a change in average temperature in a year has a measurable effect on GDP. The effect is not uniform: it's stronger in warm countries/poor countries. There is a parallel literature looking at individual performance. The optimal level is around 20C or 70F.

By the way, there is a scary empirical literature suggesting that heat stress in utero has a measurable negative effect on lifetime IQ of the baby! That suggests there is a critical period during the pregnancy when mothers should be kept in air conditioning, and should not exert themselves in warm weather! I used to think air conditioning was a luxury for wimps. (Not counting Arizona, of course.) It seems I was wrong.

I am 48 and lost both my parents a year apart. This book has helped me far more than a counselor. The author totally understands the feelings of losing ones parents in midlife. This book is a must read for anyone who has lost a parent.

One of the best books I've read on grief

I lost my mother, she was 77, suddenly 2 months ago. I had been her main caregiver. My father passed away tragically 20 years ago at the age of 60 from cancer. I took my mother's passing much harder than my father's. I miss him a lot too but the grief for my mother took me unexpectedly and I have struggled a lot. This book is one of the best books I've read on grief and in particular if you have lost both of your parents. It covers off a lot of the feelings and emotions that you will come across. It was as good as a counsellor in many ways. I would recommend this to anyone who ends up being a mid life orphan.

This was a great book to help me through my father's death.

My father was a very active 83 years old who suddenly became ill and died within four months. We were all devastated. This books talks about loosing the last of a generation.....something that none of us were prepared for. It gave us lots of things for discussion that we may have left unsaid. We were able to keep the communication open between all of my siblings. This book helped us discuss our family traditions and why they were important to us. We discussed our family home and decided to let two of my sisters keep the house as it was a very important part of who we all were as a family. We all felt it would help to keep our parents memories alive and keep us close as a family. I would highly recommend this book for reading for anyone who loses a parent.

This book is very useful for anyone working with solar or human-powered vehicles. It is the only book of its kind for these types of prototype vehicles and is well worth the money. I'm working on a car for a supermileage competition and this book has been a big help.

The Best mix of aero theory and real-world examples.

Mr. Tamai has combined understandable theory with real-world operational examples of ultra-light land vehicle aerodynamics. Anyone even thinking about working in this field MUST have this book.
As a person who has worked on such vehicles for about a decade, I can say that there is a vast void in ground-vehicle aero literature; and what is available is pretty incomprehensible to a civilian.
As a person who is trying to figure out how all the formulas and charts relate to something I'm actually trying to design and build, I can say that Mr. Tamai references the theory to concrete examples in a way that is unparalleled in this field.
The biggest compliment I can pay to Mr. Tamai is to say that his book is a key tool for the shop. Builders respect his credentials, which include being a top-notch scholar as well as a winning solar-car racer, driver, and builder for many years.

Good Benchmarking Book for Aerodynamic Vehicles

I am working on building my first aerodynamic vehicle platform.

This book was helpful to me. It helped me learn about various ways people are solving aerodynamic issues with light-weight vehicles. It compared various vehicles and presented related data. It has lots of pictures and graphs. It gives a lot of food for thought for someone new to aerodynamic vehicle design issues.

I'd recommend this to anyone designing or building electric or human powered vehicles.

Bad translation

I think that there is a good balance between text and images, and the images are of high quality. However, this book and other Taschen books that I have read suffer from poor translation. I work in translation and it appears to me that they did not use a native English speaker to translate from the German, as there are quite a few clunky sentences.

Adequate though flawed

I found this book to be a decent, though flawed, introduction to the topic of German Expressionism: The text is engaging, it covers a wide range of German Expressionist painters and groups, and there are many good color reproductions. This being said I have to agree with most of the other reviewers in saying that the editing and translation is rather poor for a book in wide circulation. The author/translator repeats several phrases and terms adnauseam (e.g. "chosen partner"), some of the sentences are awkward and badly constructed, and there are a few editing errors such as on page 127 when the text refers to Gauguin being born in 1853 when it should be Van Gogh. Despite these negative elements the book is still a worthwhile read as it does address such an interesting topic and does a fine job in covering such a large amount of territory

good art, bad editing

Great book, good illustrations. Some of the chapters are very badly edited, however. One repeats the phrase "his illness, from which he never recovered" four times in a short chapter. More typically, they end abruptly with no proper conclusion, as if chopped so as not to exceed space limitations. The writing/editing is the disappointing weak point here. Other times, terms are dropped or events referenced that have not yet been explained in the text. As an art book, the strength of the art can carry it. But it's a shame that it had to be this way.

Instead, we would hope this book will inspire all people... to forsake Babylonish doctrines and seek a return to the faith that was once delivered unto the saints." (Pg. 6)

He says, "The early Christians did not consider the cross on which Jesus died a virtuous symbol, but rather as 'the accursed tree,' a device of death and 'shame' (Heb 12:2)... They never spoke of the cross as a piece of wood one might hang from a little chain around his neck or carry in his hand as a protector or charm." (Pg. 40) He adds, "Jesus died on ONE cross---what shape was it?... the Greek word from which 'cross' is translated... simply means an upright stake or post. If the instrument on which Jesus died was no more than this, it was not a 'cross' (as such) at all! This would clearly show the folly of many types of crosses being 'Christianized.'" (Pg. 45)

He notes, "At the Easter season it is not uncommon for Christians to attend sunrise services. It is assumed that such honor Christ because he rose from the dead on Easter Sunday morning just as the sun was coming up. But the resurrection did not occur at sunrise. When Mary Magdalene came to the tomb it was yet DARK---and the tomb was already empty! On the other hand, there was a type of sunrise service that was a part of ancient sun worship... such practices, being without Scriptural example, do indicate that mixtures have been made." (Pg. 137-138)

Of the time of the Inquisition, he observes, "Some of the popes that today are acclaimed as 'great' lived and thrived during those days. Why didn't they open the dungeon doors and quench the murderous fires that blackened the skies of Europe for centuries? ... the Inquisition was ordered by papal decree and confirmed by pope after pope! Can any believe that such actions were representative of Him who said to turn the cheek, to forgive our enemies, and to do good to them that despitefully use us?" (Pg. 101)

He argues, "It is generally acknowledged that December 25th was not the actual date on which Jesus was born and that many of today's Christian customs stem from pre-Christian origins. Does this mean, then, that Christians must refuse to share meals with family and friends during the season? Should one's mission in life be an anti-Christmas crusade? Right or wrong, Christmas is a firmly established day in our calendar and, all things considered, it is evident that there are many causes more fruitful than counterproductive attempts to do away with it... If Christians were to take such actions as ... pulling their children out of school during the Christmas season---lest they take part in programs or plays---they would unwittingly place themselves on the same side as the atheists! A fanatical opposition to Christmas can cause unnecessary hurt among family and friends... an avoidance of extremes, is in order." (Pg. 145)

Woodrow is a creative Bible teacher, and is not afraid of controversy. But the reader should read OTHERS of his many books, and not just this one early book, to gain a more correct perspective.

Professor Laurence Alison is Co-director of the Centre for Critical Incident Research, University of Liverpool where he also holds a Chair in forensic psychology. He is a Chartered Forensic Psychologist, conducts research on investigative decision-making and leadership and has contributed to a number of major police enquiries as well as national police training programmes. Useful supplement to D80 owners guide

Tells you how to setup your D80 better than the Nikon guide.
Also gives good tips to improve your photographic techniques.
Bought the Kindle version and noticed hyphens missing between lens specifications, for example, 1855 instead of 18-55. Not a big deal once you know about the hyphen formatting issue in it. If you have bought or acquired a D80 without the Nikon guide then this book will be a replacement for it to help you set it up well. Also have a printed copy of the Magic Lantern D80 guide that is much more detailed than this guide, but I prefer this guide to it. Handier to keep an iPad mini in my gear bag than printed guides.

Another great Nikon Digital Field Guide

I had the Nikon D50 Digital Field Guide before I bought this book. But when my D50 died, I purchased a D80. This book is better organized and mor thorough than the Nikon User Guide for the D80. This book has plenty of information for experienced photographers specifically about the camera. But it's also not a bad guide for beginner photographers.

One of the Best Nikon D80 Guides

The Nikon D80 was designed for people like me: Jumping from an advanced digital point & shoot to this excellent SLR- both using Secure Digital cards. I'm not a pro, but I have a moderate knowledge of digital cameras. The Nikon D80 Digital Field Guide fits the type of consumer that Nikon targeted for the D80.

This book is an attractive supplement to Nikon's D80 instruction booklet. Nikon's booklet is factual but the organization is fragmented. With Nikon's booklet, new D80 users will spend more time flipping pages than taking pictures. With the D80 Digital Field Guide, facts are presented in an organized, clear, concise, and easy to understand manner. A pro that have been using digital SLR's for years wouldn't need a book in this genre, but I did and have found this book extremely useful!

I did receive a very early edition of this book. It is true that there are missing hyphens & a wrong USB port photo. Books like this are rushed for publication because Nikon will eventually make a replacement for the D80 that will make this book obsolete. That's the nature of technology today. Looking past the first printing errors, I find that the good far outweighs the bad- therefore the 5 star rating. The few mistakes are very obvious and repetitive. They do not deter the user from learning the D80 and photography. I suspect that printing errors will be corrected in later editions.

This color guide is attractive and formatted like a Frommer's travel guide. The price (an amazing $13.59 at Amazon) also makes it a bargain in comparison to other books in this category. I highly recommend this book.
