Open Your Eyes: Contributions of Diverse Women in U.S. History
By Eclectic Reader
I should state upfront that I am that rare bird who enjoys reading well-written history books, even if that book is a textbook, which this book is. If you are interested in women's history in America, you will find many inspiring contributions of American women from all ethnicities and social statuses. I enjoy learning about the women who are motivated to make a difference, but I also have a vested interest as an aspiring historical fiction writer. For example, the setting in the novel I am working on now is a settlement house in Boston at the turn of the 20th century, and I have read about extensively about those at this point. Even though the entry on settlement houses (Jane Addams established one of the first managed by females in Chicago called Hull House) was only a few pages, it documented women's role in growing the settlement house movement and mentioned something I hadn't come across yet: all-black settlement houses were established in both the North and South. Now, I have further reference points to explore in my background research (the benefit of academic books). The book covers the role of women during the Revolution, the actions activist black women took on during Emancipation, the indigenous women who fought to protect their tribes during Western Expansion, women in the industrializing labor force, and the feminist movement to name just a few topics in the textbook. I have discovered several new lines of deeper inquiry regarding women in American history. From a research perspective, the primary source material and further reading is especially valuable as are the images, photographs, and maps. If you are teaching America history in a high school, I would recommend using this text to enrich the history your students are learning. Since proficiency reading and analyzing primary source documents is an essential element of Common Core Historical Literacy standards, you will find content here to help you easily pull documents for your students to read and analyze while at the same time highlighting women's contributions to U.S. history, which we all know are highly underrepresented in K-12 history textbooks. Overall, if you are looking for a chronological presentation of important contributions of diverse American women in history, you will find interesting, inspiring content in "Through Women's Eyes."

Great insight into the history of women in the US.
By G.
History textbooks can be so dense and difficult to get through, which is a shame considering what an interesting subject history is. This book was used for a class I took in women's history and the chapter readings were something I found myself looking forward to. The topics covered and the way they're presented is clear and intelligent instead of stuffy and dense. The material is delivered in a way that it is entertaining and accessible. The photographs and letters and even the old advice columns included in the "documents" that are part of this book make it easy to see what life was like for women in different time periods without simply having it told to us. It was a great way to get a more personal feel for their experiences and make the connection between the women of our past and the women of our present and future. I learned a great deal about familiar events from the very different perspective of the women involved, as well as how the same events affected various races of women differently, which is a subject that has been largely ignored in most of my history classes and probably most history classes in general. It's rare I want to hang onto a textbook after a class is finished, but this is one I'm definitely keeping. I'd recommend it as a textbook, but also as a book to pick up if you want to learn more about the history of women in the United States, though it is pricey for casual reading. A used copy would be a great addition to anyone's collection.

A great, concise textbook.
By Diane R. Elliott
I am currently using this book as the primary textbook for a women's history course. I appreciate the fact that the authors combined typical summaries of the periods covered, but they also include document and visual primary sources. It's a great buy for the students having all in one book.

Review
[Limn] has proven that Chicano critics are the new players in the field of cultural studies.--Rafael Castillo, San Antonio Express-News

"[A] powerful and graceful book, as alive to the seductions as it is to the dangers of inevitable encounters."--Doris Sommer, author of Proceed With Caution, When Engaged by Minority Writing in the Americas

"Jos Limn's American Encounters is the beginning of a critical hope fulfilled. Cultural critics can move over and make room, listen up and encounter a Chicano critic who not only speaks about social and symbolic borderlands but who speaks from within the borderlands of race, nation, class, and the Chicano/Mexican/Gringo imagination. Limn writes a new map of cultural relationships-southern culture and Greater Mexico, Katherine Anne Porter and Selena, Manuel Gamio and Gary Cooper, Sandra Cisneros and the other Cisneros-and shapes it with a new sensibility of erotic perversions and creativities."--David Carrasco, author of City of Sacrifice

"[Limn's] approach is not only nondogmatic but deliciously eclectic, building bridges between popular culture and the highbrow, between literature, politics, and the social sciences."--Ilan Stavans

About the Author
Jos E. Limn, author of Dancing with the Devil: Society and Cultural Poetics in Mexican-American South Texas, is professor of English and anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Perfect Pass: American Genius and the Reinvention of Football, by S. C. Gwynne

A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction Book of the Year

In the tradition of Michael Lewis’s Moneyball, award-winning historian S.C. Gwynne tells the incredible story of how two unknown coaches revolutionized American football at every level, from high school to the NFL.

Hal Mumme is one of a handful of authentic offensive geniuses in the history of American football. The Perfect Pass is the story of how he irreverently destroyed and re-created the game.

Mumme spent fourteen mostly losing seasons coaching football before inventing a potent passing offense that would soon shock players, delight fans, and terrify opposing coaches. The revolution he fomented began at a tiny, overlooked college called Iowa Wesleyan, where Mumme was head coach and Mike Leach, a lawyer who had never played college football, was hired as his offensive line coach. In the cornfields of Iowa, while scribbling plays on paper napkins, these two mad inventors, drawn together by a shared disregard for conventionalism and a love for Jimmy Buffett, began to engineer the purest, most extreme passing game in the 145-year history of football. Implementing their “Air Raid” offense, their teams—at Iowa Wesleyan and later at Valdosta State and the University of Kentucky—played blazingly fast—faster than any team ever had before, and they routinely beat teams with far more talented athletes. And Mumme and Leach did it all without even a playbook. Their quarterback once completed sixty-one of eighty-six passes, both collegiate records.

In The Perfect Pass, S.C. Gwynne explores Mumme’s leading role in changing football from a run-dominated sport to a pass-dominated one, the game that tens of millions of Americans now watch every fall weekend. Whether you’re a casual or ravenous football fan, this is a truly compelling story of American ingenuity and how a set of revolutionary ideas made their way from the margins into the hot center of the game we celebrate today.

Review
"The most entertaining book on football this decade."
—Allen Barra,The Dallas Morning News

“Excellent sports history . . . an inspiring reminder that great ideas don't automatically permeate the existing ideology. Sometimes a devoted few must pursue their principles with diligence, even if they don't get the glory.”
—Publishers Weekly

“It is undeniable that the Air Raid, the fast passing game, and the frequency of the forward pass are now imprinted on football, especially, as Gwynne notes, on the college level though also in the NFL. That makes his subtitle all the more fitting, for undeniably, the two coaches changed the game—and brought glory to their institutions. A superb treat for all gridiron fans.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Arousing tale of innovation finding success in the face of the gale force windsof convention."
—Booklist

"The Perfect Pass is a perfect book about football—and the transformative power of innovation. S.C. Gwynne brings the same remarkable reporting and storytelling skills he used in Empire of the Summer Moon and Rebel Yell to reveal the dramatic history behind the passing revolution that disrupted and forever changed America’s favorite sport. His portrait of Hal Mumme, the unknown underdog coach who unleashed the Air Raid offense on the modern game, is superb, at once capturing the passion and genius that made him an unsung hero of his generation."
—Brian D. Sweany, editor in chief, Texas Monthly

"When we played against a Hal Mumme offense, our defense had to be changed dramatically. You had to throw away everything you knew or you were going to get beat. Every offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator in football better study this book to find out why."
—Jerry Glanville, former NFL and college head coach

“Being a football coach who innovates against the way the game has long been played is deeply challenging. S.C. Gwynne captures perfectly how Hal Mumme's Air Raid offense helped change the landscape of college football forever. It's a great story.”
—Bruce Arians, head coach,Arizona Cardinals

"Hal Mumme has always been a true American genius, and every year teams running his offense are among the tops in yards and points. I know, because I would've liked to have hired him. He has a brilliant football mind, and here at last is his amazing story, told in full."
—Bob Stoops, head coach, University of Oklahoma

"If you are a coach, a manager, an entrepreneur, an executive, an MBA student, etc. looking for a real life example of thinking way outside the box and changing your industry or field completely, thenThe Perfect Passis the book for you. Read it, digest it, and then apply it to your life’s work."
—Texas History Page

"The tale of Hal Mumme and how he changed American football is a David and Goliath story withsimilarities to Michael Lewis's Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, about the Oakland Athletics baseball team and its number crunching general manager, Billy Beane. That was a different sport and era, but both Beane and Mumme found themselves in underdog positions and used creative, out of the box thinking to level the playing field."
—Houston Press

"Along with his protg Mike Leach, now the head coach at Washington State University, Mr. Mumme revolutionized their sport in ways that, frankly, dwarf the legacy of Billy Beane and his gang from 'Moneyball.'"
—The Wall Street Journal

"Informative and entertaining and a must read for anyone interested in the inner game of football strategy....If you are a football coach, football fan or simply a guy who likes a good story, S.C. Gwynne scored a touchdown."
—Tony DeMeo,American Football Monthly

“Gwynne masterfully reports how this eccentric offensive genius, who became college football’s youngest offensive coordinator as a 29 year old at UTEP and who espouses heretical notions such as no weightlifting and very short practices without hitting or wind sprints, followed his own path and put passing at the forefront to runaway success. His stamp is everywhere, even in the NFL.”
—Austin American Statesman

About the Author
Praise for Empire of the Summer Moon

“Transcendent . . . Empire of the Summer Moon is nothing short of a revelation . . . will leave dust and blood on your jeans.” New York Times Book Review

"In Empire of the Summer Moon, Sam Swynne has given us a rich, vividly detailed rendering of an important era in our history and of two great men, Quanah Parker and Ranald Slidel Mackenzie, whose struggles did much to define it."

Larry McMurtry

"S.G. Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moon is many things—a thrilling account of the Texas frontier in the nineteenth century, a vivid description of the Comanche nation, a fascinating portrait of Cynthia Ann Parker and her son, the mysterious, magnificent Quanah—but most of all it is a ripping good read. Gwynne writes history with a pounding pulse and a beating heart. In Empire of the Summer Moon he’s given us an epic frontier peopled with real men and women, living and dying and hoping and dreaming at the bloody edge of civilization. I couldn’t put it down."
Jake Silverstein, Editor, Texas Monthly, and author of Nothing Happened and Then It Did

"Sam Gwynne is a master story teller and a dogged reporter, and in this book he makes history come to life in a way that everyone not just students of the Texas myth will find irresistible. I couldn't put it down."
Evan Smith, CEO and Editor in Chief, The Texas Tribune

"Man for man, the Comanches were the fiercest and most resourceful warriors in North America, and they held onto their domain with an almost otherworldly tenacity. In this sweeping work, S.C. Gwynne recreates the Comanche's lost world with gusto and style—and without sentimentality. After reading Empire of the Summer Moon, you'll never think about Texas, or the Great Plains, in quite the same way again."
Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder and Hellhound On His Trail

Praise for Rebel Yell

"In Rebel Yell, Mr. Gwynne's easy, loping style wraps itself effortlessly around the particulars of Stonewall Jackson's life, from his back of the mountain upbringing to the outburst of military genius in the Civil War. The result is a narrative vivid with detail and insight." (Wall Street Journal)

"In the magnificent Rebel Yell, one of the year's best biographies, writer S.C. Gwynne brings Jackson ferociously to life... His battle scenes are marvels of description and kinetic action. [He] brings a deep humanity to his portrayals of Jackson, his fellow Confederate generals and their Union adversaries... Gwynne's pages fly by, brimming with excitement and terror." (Newsday)

“Gwynne stirringly recreates the bloody, error plagued battles of the early war and argues that Jackson’s legend galvanized the South, outmanned and outgunned, to keep fighting.” (New Yorker)

"An engaging narrative with a pace that never flags... Gwynne accomplishes a great deal in his clear and highly readable book... If you read everything about the Civil War or if you have read very little about the Civil War Rebel Yell is an excellent addition to your reading list." (Huffington Post)

"I've reviewed many books on the Civil War, and this is far and away the best biography of a Civil War general that I've read... If you're a Civil War buff as I am or if you're just interested in wonderful biographies as I am Rebel Yell is a must read book. It reads like a novel, but it's based on extensive beyond belief research." (Huntington News)

"Gwynne’s portrait of Jackson is comprehensive, stirring, compelling....This well researched portrait of a well studied figure of the Civil War defies the odds and measurably adds to the scholarship surrounding Jackson and the conflict that defined him... The book is hard to put down." (The Dallas Morning News)

"Profoundly enlightening...The difference in Rebel Yell is...the historical sweep, the small touches, and the quality and clarity of the writing... Those sorts of little touches, page after page after page, set this book apart....Gwynne's Rebel Yell delivers what readers want and deserve — a brave, headlong charge into American history." (Chicago Tribune)

"A worthy book that does much to present the general in a realistic, critical and evenhanded manner.... Gwynne writes with style... he creates vivid word pictures and descriptions that keep the reader engaged. Rebel Yell is a worthy addition to the shelves of those who study and read about the American Civil War." (Washington Independent Review of Books)

"S.C. Gwynne provides a comprehensive portrait of a complex man who triumphed on the battlefield but remained an enigma... a joy to read." (Civil War Times)

"[Gwynne's contribution] lies in capturing Jackson’s character, personality and historical significance. He interprets Jackson as a discipline and God obsessed social bore, yet one of the fiercest fighters and most brilliant minds in American military history... a 'living myth'...Jackson ascended rapidly from nerdy artillery and physics professor at Virginia Military Institute to Lee’s audacious and seemingly invincible lieutenant." (The Raleigh News Observer)

"September’s most scintillating read may be a 640 page biography of Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson... S.C. Gwynne’s riveting retelling of the canny Confederate whose strategies shaped the early years of the Civil War is just that good." (Kirkus, feature)

"A stimulating study of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson... Gwynne reveals him to have been an early master of modern mobile warfare and a clear eyed interpreter of what modern 'pitiless war was all about'... Readers are likely to agree that, without Jackson, Lee 'would never again be quite so brilliant,' while even in the North Jackson was considered, rather than a rebel, a 'gentleman and... fundamentally an American.'" (Publishers Weekly, STARRED review)

"Spry prose and cogent insight....Showing Jackson’s exploitation of speed and deception, Gwynne’s vivid account of his Civil War run, which ended with his death in the 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, is a riveting, cover to cover read for history buffs." (Booklist, STARRED review)

“It’s hard to imagine an author breaking newground with another Jackson biography. But S.C. Gwynne does just thatin Rebel Yell... Readers will come away from Rebel Yell withan understanding of the man that goes beyond his military exploits. Gwynne’s masterful storytelling makes Rebel Yell anabsorbing choice for general readersand Civil War buffs alike.” (Bookpage)

"VERDICT: This popular history is recommended for all readers interested in the Civil War." (Library Journal)

“Rebel Yell breathes contemporary insight and fresh energy into the life of an authentic American legend. In this crackling narrative, S.C. Gwynne gives us the bold tactics, the eccentric thinking, and the wicked genius of one of history's most brilliant—and unconventional—military minds.” (Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West and In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette )

“Powerfully told, richly detailed, but also deeply human in timeless ways, Rebel Yell unmasks Gen. Stonewall Jackson, one of American history's most enduring legends (and yet most private of men). This is history at its best.” (Michael Duffy, co author of The Presidents Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity )

“With the reporter's eye for the revealing vignette and the story teller’s ear for the rhythm of human striving, S. C. Gwynne gives us a beautifully penetrating account of the meteoric rise and tragic death of the most legendary of Civil War soldiers.” (H. W. Brands, author of The Man Who Saved the Union: Ulysses Grant in War and Peace )

“The great tragedy of modern historiography is that more historians don’t write like S.C. Gwynne. In this book on Stonewall Jackson’s Civil War career, Gwynne has fashioned a fast paced narrative of a man complex and enigmatic, awkward and exceptional. Gwynne has taken on a giant figure of quirks and brilliance who demands both restraint and a facile pen, and he delivers in vivid form.” (John Hennessy, author of First Battle of Manassas: An End To Innocence and Return to Bull Run: The Campaign and Battle of Second Manassas )

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Coach
By Flint Michaelson
It may as well have been called "portrait of the artist as a young coach," because that's what Hal Mumme is: an artist whose medium is football. His likes to win, but more than winning, he is a man who once had a vision of football transforming football from a brutal scrum and into a passionate display of arial perfection and commitment and, after years of toil and study, he achieved his vision. Along the way he and his teams bucked orthodoxies at every turn, sometimes apparently just for the sake of being different, and also broke nearly every passing record possible, and revolutionized the game even while he was exiled from the big time himself.

More than just the story of Mumme, though, Gwynne delves deep into the history of the forward pass in football, from its legalization (and disdain) in the early 20th century and its evolution through famous figures like Bill Walsh, LaVell Edwards, and Mouse Davis to more obscure names like Jack Neumeier, Red Faught, and Dutch Meyer. He traces the evolution and slow uptick in passing throughout the decades, even as the pioneers who aired it faced constant skepticism from purists who thought their approach wasn't merely unsound strategy, but also faintly immoral.

We see the young Mumme giving up a lucrative sales job as a young man to embark on his personal odyssey in coaching, paying his dues through a string of hard-won but precarious jobs that paid next to nothing, as he met and studied the works of those masters who'd came before. All of it to pursue a vision that began as both a passion and a vague notion: to throw the football and throw it more often and better than anyone had ever done before. This book tells the story of Mumme toiling in obscurity, constantly studying and criss-crossing the country to learn and refine his system, putting in the time in the woodshed like all great artists do.

This is a good read for anyone interested in studying the history of the passing game. Gwynne's style is crisp and a fun read, but don't expect a lot of memorable turns of phrase here. Some of the history that Gwynne cites in regards to Mumme also seems to be fudged a bit, and with little knowledge of his subject before he began writing this book, Gwynne seems to heap a bit too much praise and credit onto Mumme, delving into constant hyperbole while glossing over the man's faults and failings (which would make him a more interesting subject of a biography) and ending, oddly, on Mumme's high point as a coach: his first Kentucky team's 1997 upset of Alabama (which was in the middle of one of its worst seasons in years, it turns out, but Gwynne doesn't tell you that, either) that came in the midst of a 5-7 season.

That's odd because the next 19 years of Mumme's career, which was a spectacular fall from grade that is probably a compelling book in its own right, gets glossed over in a brief epilogue at the end, such as when he says that Kentucky team in 2001 had lost a lot of talent the year before (justifying the 2-9 record), but he fails to mention that Mumme brought much of that on himself by running off players and, inexplicably, benching his returning All SEC QB Dustin Bonner in favor of 300lb freshman interception machine Jared Lorenzen. Hal Mumme is a brilliant, fascinating, transformative figure in football history whose career has been tragically defined by his own hubris and apparent inability to get out of his own way, but Gwynne doesn't even touch upon that angle here, leaving this book a shell of what it could have been.

Gwynne also fails to delve into the reasons why the Air Raid offense, which has traditionally had a pretty mediocre record in terms of winning percentage, continued to spread and grow ever more popular even as Mumme's star fell further and further. The lack of any mention of Tony Franklin, an assistant coach who was a big part of Mumme's downfall at Kentucky and later popularized the offense by packaging and selling it to high school and college coaches eager to learn "the system" also seems like a glaring omission.

Still, if you want to learn how the passing game evolved into the wide open offenses we see everywhere today or come to a better understanding of how art and football intersect, you will definitely want to read this book.

Well done, Thanks.
By Russell Roberts
Great book. Although i do not agree with all of Gwynne's observations on why the passing game has had such a difficult time in becoming the dominating offensive concept in football, his facts are great. He explains quickly and simply the transformation of offensive thought. He includes some folks that usually get left out like "Dutch Meyer." Hal Mumme was and is a difference maker. His story so remarkable and the sacrifices he made to develop it were so significant, that they need to be told. Gwynne has done it. As a veteran Texas High School coach and a friend of Hal Mumme and several of the characters in the book I say "well done and thanks."

Great football read
By K. Furr
I give out very few 5 stars to books, but that's what I'm giving here. This was simply a great read. If you're old enough to have followed football for a few decades, you know the passing game has somehow grown from an afterthought to the dominant mode of play, making football more exciting than ever (and if you don't believe me about the exciting part, just watch some 1960s college game on ESPN Classic and prepare for a nice snooze). I recall in the 1990s arguing that the passing game was really taking off and a friend actually argued against me. Well I was right but I wish I had known then all the details I know now, having read this book. It tells a lot of the story about how that happened and the personalities driving the change. And it might just make you want to run to the nearest Division III stadium to see what's up at the scrappiest level of play.

Review
"I’ve long admired Leo Biga’s journalism and prose portraiture for its honesty, thoughtfulness, and accuracy. On a personal note, throughout many years of being interviewed, I find Mr. Biga’s articles about me to be the most complete and perceptive of any journalist’s anywhere. They ring true to me — even in critique — in a way that reveals the depth of his talent in observation, understanding, and expression." —Alexander Payne

"Alexander Payne is one of American cinema's leading lights. How fortunate we are that Leo Biga has chronicled his rise to success so thoroughly." —Leonard Maltin, film critic and best-selling author

"Alex Payne is one of the few remaining auteurs in the Conglomerate Hollywood era. Leo Biga, a Nebraska native like his subject, deftly looks at how the ‘home place’ of Nebraska has shaped and nurtured Payne’s singular artistic vision." —James Marshall Crotty, columnist, director and producer

"I'd be an Alexander Payne fan even if we didn't share a Nebraska upbringing: he is a masterly, menschy, singular storyteller whose movies are both serious and unpretentious, delightfully funny and deeply moving. And he's fortunate indeed to have such a thoughtful and insightful chronicler as Leo Biga." —Kurt Andersen, host, Studio 360

"Last night I finished your wonderful new book and I enjoyed it so much! Alexander Payne is such a terrific director and I loved reading about his films in detail. Congratulations." —Joan Micklin Silver, filmmaker

"Alexander is a master. Many say the art of filmmaking comes from experience and grows with age and wisdom but, in truth, he was a master on day one of his first feature. Leo Biga has beautifully captured Alexander's incredible journey in film for us all to savor." —Laura Dern, actress, Citizen Ruth

"Alexander Payne richly deserves this astute book about his work by Leo Biga. I say this as a fan of both of theirs; and would be one even if I weren’t from Nebraska." —Dick Cavett, TV legend

"Leo Biga brings us a fascinating, comprehensive, insightful portrait of the work and artistry of Alexander Payne. Mr. Biga’s collection of essays document the evolution and growth of this significant American filmmaker and he includes relevant historical context of the old Hollywood and the new. His keen reporter’s eye gives the reader an exciting journey into the art of telling stories on film." —Ron Hull, Nebraska Educational Television legend, University of Nebraska emeritus professor of broadcasting

3.5 for this M/M shifter anthology
By Ezinwanyi
This book was a collection of novellas (Nine stories in all). A couple stories were really great, and a couple were really bad. Most of them were in the middle range. Overall, I would give this novella a 3.5 rating because the book was pretty solid overall.

Moon Dogs by Erica Kealey (4-stars)
This story featured two detectives Cary and Grant. After an attack that would have killed an average man, Cary disappeared from the hospital. His partner, Grant, went to find Cary in order to see if he was okay and also declare his true feelings to Cary. When Grant located Cary, Cary was nonchalant and asked Grant to leave him alone. Upset and humiliated, Grant left, only to be kidnapped by a werewolf clan after Cary. After Grant escapes, he reunites with Cary who confesses a secret that has kept Cary from being who he truly is. This story was short and sweet. I liked the law enforcement background and the whole partner aspect to their relationship.

The Wolf and the Moon by Kayla Bain-Vrba (3-stars)
This story featured a gladiator themed war game with two star-crossed lovers, Dag and Myka. They met and fell in love, but were thrust into the war game and forced to fight for survival. This one was very reminiscent of the Hunger games, with the same kind of emotional anguish. This short dystopian was sad, but the end was good.

A Kind of Remedy by Ashley Shaw (2.5 stars)
This story featured a young man, Nicolaus Andren, who needed money and agreed to one of those pharmaceutical experiments for money. However, it turns out the scientist have been lying about the procedure. They were creating werewolves in the lab. Nicolaus escapes and tries to find the cure to restore him back to his human only form. His quest leads to him to discover others like him and a new way of life. I didn't enjoy this story at all. It was a bit contrived and it just didn't engage me at all. The lack of originality made it difficult to get through.

The Were Cure by Sasha L. Miller (3.5-stars)
This story featured Innot Grant, a wizard, who was summoned to the royal palace because the princes were cursed. According to the King, the curse will turn his sons into werewolves. He demanded Innot find out who placed the curse on his sons and reverse it. It was an okay read. The characters were enjoyable.

Runaway Prince by May Ridge (3.5-stars)
This story featured a prince, Astin Noelle du Pris, who constantly ran away from his responsibilities and a male escort, Delaney Day, who was always looking for a mark. It seemed that Noelle didn't have good coping skills, and the expectation of being the next king made him anxious. Delaney, on the other hand, hid his feelings behind sarcasm and quips. As Noelle ran from family, Delaney was looking for something to belong to. In each other, they found the missing piece that strengthened them.

The Wolf's Moor by Lupin Drake (2.5 stars)
This story featured two siblings that were the last of their family that had been cursed by the Sidhe to turn into werewolves. Seamus O'Malley had accepted his dual nature, but his sister Ethne hated the curse. The only way to break the curse is to kill the O'Connor family and descendants, because they were the enemies of the Sidhe, but Seamus cannot bear to murder the last descendant. His sister, on the other hand, insists on freeing them, thus began the battle between the siblings. This story wasn't enjoyable as many people died unnecessarily and everyone was keeping some secret about who they truly were.

Moonwitch by M.J. Willow (3 stars)
This story featured Athenas, a prince, who came over to investigate strange activities that no one could account for. The king's soldiers were being turned into wolves and no one knew why and who was responsible. This one was more of a paranormal mystery on a navy ship, and the investigation lead to some interesting revelations.

Coming Home by Elizah J. Davis (4.5 stars)
This story was my favorite. It featured a werewolf named Caleb, who escaped an attack on his family when he was young. He was adopted by humans and basically had to figure out his dual nature by himself (no one guiding him). One day at a hotel, he is found by a man named Hunter, who claims that Caleb's family has been searching him for him for the past 20 years. Hunter and Caleb's chemistry was smoldering. There was just something that felt so right about these two werewolves. I enjoyed this short story from the minute they met to the last word on the page. The connection with the family, the whole reunion was so touching. Great read! This one was well paced, very engaging and thorough satisfying.

The Werewolf of Grey Lake Inn by Megan Derr (3.5-stars)
This story featured a vampire Astor and his agent, Tennyson, who were snowed in at an inn, where Astor was investigating some paranormal activity. These two were victims of a lack of communication, as well as fear. Being trapped at the inn allowed them to talk and get to know each other much better.

Offering immensely practical advice, Basics of Qualitative Research, Fourth Edition presents methods that enable researchers to analyze, interpret, and make sense of their data, and ultimately build theory from it. Authors Juliet Corbin and Anselm Strauss (late of the University of San Francisco and co-creator of grounded theory) walk readers step-by-step through the research process—from the formation of the research question through several approaches to coding, analysis, and reporting. Packed with definitions and illustrative examples, this highly accessible book concludes with chapters that present criteria for evaluating a study, as well as responses to common questions posed by students of qualitative research. New end-of-chapter “Insider Insights” contributed by qualitative researchers give readers a sense of what it’s like to work in the field. Significantly revised, this Fourth Edition remains a landmark volume in the study of qualitative methods.

Recommended for postgrad students doing serious qualitative research
By Kwakker1000
Grounded theory is no longer a new way of doing research, but there is still a lot of difficult material around that does not really help the researcher (especially the novice researcher). This book sorted out lots of issues for me, and I would heartily recommend it. Readable, well structured, and just what postgraduate students using qualitative methods in their research need!

Great book for Grounded Theory research. This was one of my textbooks for my doctoral work so if the school used it, there must be some merit to it, right?

A great approach to sales
By Amazon Customer
I read this back to back in one afternoon. It's straightforward & brilliantly illustrated and is an essential guide for anyone who is struggling with sales, like me! As a trained nurse, now working in the cosmetic industry, I've always struggled with recommending treatments & products as the last way I would want to come across is pushy. This book has shown ways to approach clients with recommendations, as after all that's what the customer is wanting in coming to our aesthetic clinic! I'm going to use this in staff training on communication & customer service. Highly recommend!
