Amazing book, but misled by amazon yet again

As an owner of Dream Theater's first keyboard anthology, this book had a high reputation to live up to. As far as the book itself goes, Jordan seems to have gone above and beyond for us. Contained within this tome are some of the songs I was disappointed not to see in the first book (longtime fans will likely squeal with delight when they see "Space Dye Vest" is finally transcribed here!), and each song is preceded by an exercise concocted by Jordan himself, focusing on a particular technique used in the song in question. I have only skimmed these so far, but they look like they will help greatly in mastering these signature dream theater keyboard styles. Couple this with what so far look to be spot-on arrangements, and no sections with only snippets of songs (as they did with the "six degrees" tracks on the first book), this book can be highly recommended to anyone looking to master a challenging piano piece.

So, why four stars? The first issue is totally personal preference, so don't let it deter you: I'm not personally a fan of "The Ministry of Lost Souls" (to explain quickly: while both the softer parts and the proggy bridge are individually nice to listen to, I feel that the bridge unnecessarily breaks up what was otherwise a fun ballad, while the bridge could have easily found a home in a more proggy song), and think that its position in the book could have been taken by a much more awesome DT song (I'd really like a tab for "Strange Deja Vu", "Trial of Tears", or ideally "Hell's Kitchen"). This is completely personal preference, as I said, and I know many people do enjoy Ministry. No biggie.

The second problem is also not with the book itself, but with Amazon. Like their mixup in the description for DT's "Full Score Anthology", they have once again gotten the track list wrong for this book. To my extreme disappointment, "Lines in the Sand" is not actually in this book at all. This is one of my absolute favorite songs, with one of my absolute favorite keyboard parts (along with the HK intro), it is one of the main reasons I snatched this book up the minute I found it online, and I was very sad to see it not included in the book. I can only hope that another keyboard book will be put out (I'll keep buying them!) that will tackle this amazing song, and hopefully the other songs I suggested earlier will be included as well.

So that's it! If you love Dream Theater, love piano, and aren't afraid to work very hard to perfect these songs, you can't go wrong with this purchase. Keep buying them so Jordan keeps publishing new ones, please!

Everything great,except for one thing

Some of my favorite songs liter this book and I really enjoy, I really enjoy practicing to this book, and I'm learning how to improv in this book mostly for the reason in the Mid-Section in "Home"

Anyways, to get this out of the way, I gave it four-stars, not because of the book, nothing wrong with the book, but for the description of this book on this website. "Lines in the Sand" is definitely one of my Top 5 Favorite songs and even though the description claims to have this song in the book, the book itself claims to not have it.

This book is definitely a great buy and I totally recommend it to ANYONE!!!!

Michael Laskier served as the Executive Director of the International Sephardic Educational Center, and is currently a professor of history and political science at Ashqelon College of Bar-Ilan University and Beit Berl College in Israel. He is the author of The Jews of Egypt 1920-1970: In the Midst of Zionism, Anti-Semitism, and the Middle East Conflict, also published by NYU Press.

A good book, but could be more complete

This is one of the few books, if not the only one, on Egyptian Jews that mention the detention camps of Abu Zaabal and Tura.
I knew a person who was one of about 400 to 500 Jews interned in Egypt during the Six Day War for up to 3 years. He stayed 3 years and 15 days between 1967 and 1970. He was tortured: ordered to walk on broken glass, beaten on the head repeatedly. Some of the younger inmates were raped.
The book has a lot of details about property sequestration, and the dispossession of Egyptian Jewry. The author seems to be detail oriented. However he did not detail our suffering and torture in Abu Zaabal and Tura.
The author is a little bit dry, but that preference is a drawback, since as a result, he may have avoided talking about torture. I encourage him to go with a second edition, but before he does that, he should talk to the Abu Zaabal and Tura internees.

Essential piece of history

If you're interested at all in the Second Exodus from Egypt, this is an essential book. Laskier reviews the early 20th century history of the Jewish community in Egypt, and then runs down, year by year, how nearly all Jews left Egypt. He differentiates the conditions of each year in the critical period from the end of WWII until the late 60s, and reviews the different exit routes and destinations and sources of help for different streams of the Second Exodus.

This isn't a set of anecdotes - it is real and solid history. The bibliography checks out, and the notes are useful in themselves.

To be honest, the math of State Space, pioneered by Russians like Liapunov and Pontryagin during and after Sputnik is daunting, as it substituted ordinary and partial differential equations for transfer functions, the calculus of variations for Wiener-Hopf in optimization, and Liapunov for Bode and Nyquist in stability (although Bode is certainly still used).

Because of this, this wonderful classic text gratefully reprised by Dover is still one of the most intuitive explanations about the "practical" side of State-Space. If you're "experiencing" (read enduring) the typical Engineering career cut/sort series of systems and signals then state space courses, this book is a MUST along with the Schaum's problem/solution examples. This also is ideal for self study for folks who want to get a more intuitive and analogous approach to SS with the outstanding didactics and pedagogy of a bygone age where teachers were more concerned with us learners than strutting their mathematical prowess page after page.

There are some daunting equations (not problems and solutions), but well explained and illustrated, and numerous diagrams and graphs (especially input/output diagrams for transfer functions) are given so we "get" the underlying concepts. Today we'd call these alogrithms, data structures, UML and parse control schematics, but they work regardless of nomenclature!

For problems: Schaum's has an out of print 1970s problem guide that is outstanding, used for under $10 US, at: Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of State Space and Linear Systems (brown cover). The modern versions of these are included in their Signals and Systems problem books, such as: Schaum’s Outline of Signals and Systems, 3rd Edition (Schaum's Outline Series) (the link is the 3rd edition there also is a perfectly fine 2nd for less money at): Schaum's Outline of Signals and Systems, Second Edition (Schaum's Outline Series). Heck, even the oldies but goodies problem guides have problems that are still on exams today!

Highly recommended for any bright undergrad and especially EEs, MEs, math majors etc. about to "encounter" signals and systems! Also, as always with Dover, a $150 text for $20 US new-- keep these coming Dover! This is obviously not appropriate with the current state of the art in e-readers due to the slaughter of the LaTex, let alone the diagrams, but Dover makes up for that with it's "ebook pricing for a new printed book" strategy.

IMPORTANT! Like many Dovers, this has a "look inside" feature on Amazon. If you're unsure of the text's level compared to your own level of math (especially if you're a teacher or in AP HS), DO check out the look inside feature above. Confident publishers do this, and they'd also rather have you happy with your purchase. If the stuff is too advanced after you look, you can peruse a Schaums or less technical intro first, such as Albertos' very fine beginner and popular Control text: Feedback and Control for Everyone, which also is $20 US, despite being from Springer!

Full disclaimer, I was one of the first reviewers of draft versions of this book but I went through it a second time to make sure I internalized all of the great tips in here. It’s rare these days to come across a book discussing a website I was previously clueless about, but these guys have done it. I certainly had no idea it was a great way to get traffic or build your brand! The interviews with Quora Top Writers also reveals a lot of hidden insights into how they've managed to make it to the top and get noticed by hundreds of thousands of people. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's either new or currently reading / writing on Quora!
