Just as slavery is the existential basis of the Black subject position, genocide is essential to the ontology of the Indian. Both positions are foundational to the existence of (White) humanity.

Wilderson provides detailed readings of two films by Black directors, Antwone Fisher (Denzel Washington) and Bush Mama (Haile Gerima); one by an Indian director, Skins (Chris Eyre); and one by a White director, Monster’s Ball (Marc Foster). These films present Red and Black people beleaguered by problems such as homelessness and the repercussions of incarceration. They portray social turmoil in terms of conflict, as problems that can be solved (at least theoretically, if not in the given narratives). Wilderson maintains that at the narrative level, they fail to recognize that the turmoil is based not in conflict, but in fundamentally irreconcilable racial antagonisms. Yet, as he explains, those antagonisms are unintentionally disclosed in the films’ non-narrative strategies, in decisions regarding matters such as lighting, camera angles, and sound.

Great Book!

I purchased this book after I saw the "Leonardo di Vinci" exhibit at my local museum. This particular exhibt showcased his inventions, not his artwork. There were many full size replicas of machines that he thought of that were actually built for this exhibit. I was intrigued by the bridge that could be built with just a few stick and got stronger the more weight you put on it. After putting the dowel sized replica together at the exhibit, I had to have one for myself to build. That's the primary reason I purchased this book. Now that I have it in my hands, I've been going over the different activities I can do with my baby siblings, and I'm so excited I have this book in hand. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in "how things work" and science in general.

Excellent Handa On Projects !

This was perfect for our 8 year old son . We just purchased this second one for a birthday gift for a 9 year old . There are so many small and larger scale inventions to be made . A lot of the stuff you'll find that you already have on hand . Makes for inexpensive entertainment and great for family night .
My son is on the autism spectrum and was totally engaged and absolutely fascinated by the things he could create .
I would highly recommend this book . Beats playing video games hands down !

I didn’t end up using this book much for my history classes as I’d hoped. I tried a few of the simple ones at home and they didn’t turn out very well. The more involved projects don’t seem to fit our needs as they are too complicated to finish in an hour.

Too Much!

This is history by committee. There are 6 different authors listed for this book, and each of them should have just written a text about their own area of expertise. The text is dry, droning on and on, yet somehow not really getting to any point. I suppose it just lacks a voice or a focus.
It doesn't help that the publisher has crammed in so much to a relatively small trade paperback book by using a small font (about a 10 or an 8). They've also used a light ink on a semi-gloss paper which makes reading uncomfortable. Yes there are full color illustrations and maps throughout, but frankly, I would rather have a text that's more engaging and easily read.

Great informative book

I bought this book as part of my assigned readings. I was taking a HIST 157 online course.

As a non citizen I had so much to learn. This book was so well laid out, chronologically detailing the young but packed history of America since 1865.

It was a very interesting book and would recommend it to anyone, taking a class or just furthering their own understanding of American history.

I had to purchase this book for a college course that I was enrolled in. The book is very informative, but unlike some of the textbooks I have bought in the past, this book is easy to red and is in language that I can understand. The book is at my level.

An exhilarating jaunt with God!

I am by no means a religious person. I grew up Roman Catholic but hated going to CCD because I felt like everything they were saying God did or didn't do was all a lie. So when I heard about this book I was very interested to see what this guy had to say. I have to admit if THIS was what I was taught when I was a kid I probably would have believed a little bit more! This memoir is funny and honest. It's not trying to force you to believe anything. But it does open your mind to ask the questions maybe you were too afraid to ask yourself. Grisetti is just speaking about what he experienced and honestly, it makes sense! All of it! It's a great quick read! Very much enjoyed it!

This book is extremely well done and well articulated. I would advise though that the reader approach this book with an open mind. Yes, some parts are, as the author states, "trippy," but I found his experience with God fascinating and well worth the journey. What would I ask if I was afforded the same opportunity? Would the answers still be the same? Only God knows. However, I do know that, as a spiritual person, it is important to ask questions, look for answers that make sense to us, and not be afraid to explore. Well, done, Mr. Grisetti, well done.

The best golf book on my shelf of golf books by a mile

This is the best golf book ever written. It might sound hyperbolic but I mean. I should qualify that statement with a simple disclaimer: this in NOT a technical examination of the mechanics of hitting a golf ball (although the section about teaching beginners is brilliant). This is a book for people who already have a mountain of technical information between their ears, each little swing key competing with the last, sabotaging their natural ability to perform the athletic sequence of a golf swing.
I'm still selling it short. This is a philosophy book. You know the old saying "he's his own worst enemy"? Welcome to the explanation. We have an analytical part of our brain that dominates our internal discourse. He is omnipresent and opinionated, and he often usurps control of functions that are perfectly suited to our instinctual selves. In other words, he tries to micromanage the very things he's unsuited for. The golf swing is a perfect example. This book teaches you how to give that analytical part of your brain something constructive to do, something for which he has real aptitude--awareness--and frees up the instinctive part of self to perform the complex actions he is perfectly suited for without the constant criticism and absurd expectations of the analytical self getting in the way.
It will take time to condition the analytical self to his new roll. He will try to pop back up in the roll where he is least effective. This is great practice. He's easy to fool. Give him something useful to do and go back at it. You will play better golf than you've ever played in your life, and you will finally know how to enjoy the game without that destructive attachment to the outcome of every single shot that has ruined so many perfectly good rounds of golf.

from error to excellence

Timothy Gallwey has established himself as one of the foremost educators extant. And all from an error. In his youth, he was a skilled champion tennis player, yet he failed to hit a point that he had practised thousands of times at a crucial moment in a finals. What was the difference in that moment that prevented him his deserved success? Upon thinking about the moment, he uncovered an incredible principle of learning which he turned into a sturcture whch allows the seperation of talent from errors: Performance equals potential minus interference.
Gallwey has become the topmost explorer of "stuff" that prevents us from achieving anything close to our natural excellence. In a series of books, of which this one is the most famous, he has applied the formula to tennis, golf, skiing, music, business and just natural day-to-day living. Awareness and self-correction are the bi-words that allow for discrimination between real potential and the interference that block awareness. His examples and drills aim at identyfying the interference and the means to diminish their impact. If you want to find what your potential really is and ways to realize it, Gallway is your guied.

Worthwhile Adjunct to Standard Instruction

This is a quite unique and valuable book, that emphasizes the mental game. It is unique in that the author is not a highly skilled golfer. His real forte is tennis, and his book on the inner game of tennis is what lead him to venture to the sport of golf. To summarize his approach, he emphasizes getting away from relying mainly on a myriad of mechanical thoughts, and instead on learning to trust your native abilities. He emphasizes things like relaxation techniques, ways of minimizing the excessive tension that afflicts all but the very finest players. (Although even the very best sometimes focus on the mechanical so much that excessive tension creeps into their games. A few years ago Justin Leonard was in the midst of a slump until he finally realized that his grip pressure had increased FOUR fold!) I will say that the first edition of this book went to extremes, practically claiming that no mechanical thoughts at all were needed. I believe that some of that naivety has been eliminated in this edition. The ideal has to be a blend of mechanical and mental aproaches to the swing. This book can help. His approach is a needed counterpoint to the excessively mechanical approach that the typical serious amateur player takes. 'Paralysis by analysis' is a real problem, and by addressing mental side of the game, and learning to TRUST the innate abilities our bodies have rather than trying to make everything happen, you can free up your swing and play with more confidence and less frustration. Is this book a panacea? No! You will have to work at these skills just like you work on your mechanics for them to become effective under pressure, but they do help if you stick with them.
